Drag's Post #337
Right, so last night, my roommate came in drunk off his ass. This isn't really all that weird or anything, he sometimes is drunk when he walks in, but this time, he was drunker than usual. Oh well, I tried to get him to his bed (top bunk) so he could just pass out like a good drunky, so I could shower, get ready for/go to bed in peace.

And yeah, it worked just fine, really, but he wanted the window shades closed so the sun doesn't kill him in the morning. Fine, whatever. So finally I go to sleep, and I sleep just fine. When I wake up, I get ready for class, and I set off for the building I have to go to. Little did I know, it was drizzling. I didn't take my umbrella, so I didn't know. Oh well, walking in a light drizzle never hurts anyone, just makes them damp.

So I get to the building, I get a soda from the vending machine (no problems here, I successfully got my soda just fine), take a swig of it, put it in my backpack, and head in to the class. It's an economics class, and the professor is pretty cool, but I don't like politics at all, and he usually has to use political situations as examples. Negative examples.

I kept telling myself I would never take a class about anything remotely US political ever again, but it keeps happening. In high school, I had to learn about government and politics and all that bullshit I don't care about at all. In the first semester, I took western civilization (requirement for my Computer Science major), and I did alright in it, but I had to be reminded about how the big bad powerful white caucasian men of divine English lightness stole land from the natives and all that good stuff. I feel pretty bad, because I'm caucasian, and I speak English, and I feel worse, because we usually forced them to follow Christian religion. And then we are reminded about hiroshima, which makes me feel even worse.

So next semester, I took Geography (there was some kind of history-related alternative, but I decided against it for obvious reasons), and I ended up failing the class and getting no credit. Wonderful, because I had to watch a documentary on Hiroshima, which made me feel like shit again, and then we learned about WalMart, which didn't make me sad, but made me feel scared.

So anyway, back on track, in Economics, the professor sometimes uses US political situations as examples of bad economics. For example, people freezing to death (literally), because the gas lines were shut off, due to price controls, apartment buildings being arsoned, and many people dying again, due to rent controls (and it being compared to Hiroshima again), and all sorts of other death stuff. Today, we learned about how our goverment lied to us (what a surprise), saying Japanese wouldn't buy Ford cars because they're Anti-American, but what they DIDN'T mention in the national broadcast was how in Japan, the driver sits on the right side of the car, whereas Ford's cars have the driver sitting on the left. And this happened again with Apple Computer. "They're not being fair, they're anti-american". Really now? The lack of sales can't be because the software is still in English, is it?

So anyway, after feeling like shit again, because of how dumb the US, the country I live in, seems to be, I walked outside, drizzling still, on the way to the building I go to get lunch. On the way, I see one of those student solicitors holding up a sign that says something like "ex-homosexuals praise Jesus Christ for curing their homosexuality". What a load of bullshit this is, I hate when people do stuff like this to shove their religious beliefs down your throat. This is the main thing about religion that really gets on my nerves. So I just keep my distance and continue walking, trying to just get away from it.

But no! It can't just be that simple! The guy starts bellowing "There is a song about (something or other, religious or homosexuality related)" or something dumb like that. So I plug my ears and start humming Pescatore. So anyway, once distance drowns him out, I'm greeted with "FREE CONDOMS! PRACTICE SAFE SEX!". Now, there's nothing really bad about that, safe sex is a good thing. However, sex was really the last thing I wanted to think about at that point. I felt like shit because the US fucks everyone over, I had to avoid the bellowing anti-homosexual religious nut, it's STILL drizzling, I'm wet, I woke up an hour ago, and I'm asexual towards other humans.

Sex wasn't what I wanted to think about. So I heard "FREE CONDOMS! PRACTICE SAFE SEX!" shouted by various people about 10 times before distance drowned them out too. BUT WAIT! THERE'S MORE! Up ahead, I see several signs about how abortion is murder, and people passing stuff out next to said signs all over the place. Luckily, I was close to where I needed to go, so I ducked into the building so I could get my lunch.

So I order it, and I'm just waiting for it to be ready. GMU likes to hire mentally-handicapped people to do gruntwork (like collecting garbage, stacking trays, all that stuff), and one of them was getting upset over something, and he started bugging one of the workers at the place I was getting my lunch. I guess he called the worker something insulting, because the worker said "why'd you say that? You hurt my feelings!" to the mentally-handicapped guy. Repeat ad nauseum. I finally get my sandwich, and I high-tail it out of there. I still have to deal with the anti-abortionists, and it's STILL drizzling, so I had to walk out of my way just to get around them, to keep my distance, getting wetter, because it was longer than my usual route.

I'm praising the lucky stars above me as I walk to my dorm building, for the morning/noon of great annoyance is now over.

Why do people do this? Why aren't humans EXTINCT yet? Ugh... this morning could've gone better.

I lived on campus for my first year of university, and I didn't like it at all. I couldn't sleep because of all the partying. Besides, it was one of the most expensive places around at close to $900 a month (my current place is $500 a month). It wasn't worth the money at all:
- No restrictions on noise, even at night. Well, technically you were supposed to be quiet after midnight, but since the rules were enforced by students selected as "community leaders", they weren't really enforced at all. There were always people yelling and running up and down the halls and banging around, and I was practically the only person who kept my door closed.
- They did have free wireless, but it went down constantly and was extremely slow. It only worked in a few parts of the apartment. Getting decent Internet cost the regular amount.
- Laundry was only on the even floors. I was on an odd floor, so I had to go up or down to do the laundry. And I had to stay with it the whole time lest it get stolen.
- When I moved into the apartment, it was absolutely filthy. Apparently they never cleaned anything.
- There were trash chutes, but students would throw doors or lit cigarettes down them and then we'd have to walk around to the back of the building.
- Speaking of lit cigarettes, there were fire alarms all the time, often at night or early in the morning.
- Lousy location. It's close to school, but the campus and housing are surrounded by trees and a few houses. Since I don't drive, I need to be fairly close to things like grocery stores.

I'm sure other colleges and universities have similarly bad housing though.

Hmm, I'd believe the doors thing. Supposedly (quite?) a few years ago, people managed to chuck a vending machine out a dorm window here.

Err... As far as dorm life goes, "your experience may vary." The one I was stuck in for the last two years was miserable, fire alarms, etc. This year, though... Great place. Like... 20 feet from two different (on-campus) food places, no fire alarms, minimal noise...

Yeah, I'm not sure how a whole door would fit down there, but I overheard students talking about such a thing happening recently, causing the housing staff to close the trash chutes yet again. Apparently the 9th floor has roof access and people can go up there and jump off or whatever, and maybe there's access to the chute...I don't know though.

This gives me the ridiculous mental image of someone jumping off the roof into the chute while riding on a door. Which is obviously not what happened.

People who hold signs in public rarely last five minutes with me. If I can make them get fed up and go home, I've done my job.

Try community college next time. Same credit hours, less opportunity for stupidity.

My dad teaches at community college. It's still stupidity, just a different kind...he lets me read some of the essays he gets, and very few of them are good at all.
