Today I officially started teaching myself Mandarin Chinese ... I will be greatly disappointed if I cannot converse in it very well by the end of the Summer vacation.

I'm very optimistic about my ability to accomplish this.

Mandarin Chinese? Good luck. No matter how much optimism you may have, it won't be easy...

I guess in the modern world, knowing Chinese can be useful.

Good luck, FieryIce.

Me, I'd never be able to memorize all of those characters.

It's a lot easier if you're learning the language to go with them, particularly if you are frequently reading said language. My personal experience only extends to Japanese, but I would imagine the same applies to Chinese.

FieryIce, are you going to learn to write traditional or simplified characters?

I'm learning the simplified characters first, but I would like to learn the traditional ones (at least be able to read them) once I am very comfortable with the simplified ones.

I agree with Joe, Terra, it's easier than it seems once you're actually learning the language.

Okay, I swear I posted a reply to this topic but are you going to have any buddies speak the language to you often to help out? Because that shit helps immensely, take it from me. My parents used to hire nannies who only spoke Chinese so we'd all learn the language. My proficiency in Mandarin went way up in that time and most of the Mandarin I know today really just came from that period. True story.

I do remember your boyfriend is Chinese, though, but you have to force him to talk to you in it!

Anyway, I started a tumblr today. It's about music. It's pretty neat and I can post about all the new music I've been checking out lately.

He refuses to speak in Mandarin... He helps me when I ask him stuff but if I ask him something like "what are you doing?" in Mandarin, he'll just reply in English.

Though, at the moment it won't be of much help since I can't really "converse" yet. (I started on Friday)

Well, today he asked me a few questions that I could answer well ... maybe he will speak to me in Mandarin once I become more capable of holding a conversation.

He uses it to order in (authentic) Chinese restaurants after all...

I had Chinese food last night. Actually was very good.

Tip: Never go to a Chinese restaurant to eat. Most of them around here are buffet-style and are pretty gross. Ordering from a buffet Chinese place, however, allows you to get what you want and it's far more convenient. Oh, and you can order stuff that you can't find in the restaurant itself.

I had Chinese food on Saturday - well, pseudo-Chinese food that's only Chinese because I soaked it in oils and soy and teriyaki sauces.

I feel like buying some one of these days ...

I actually like buffet-style restaurants, Chinese or not. Sure, it may be a little gross, but to me walking down the aisle and looking at all the choices is eye-candy. I also enjoy all the smells... that said, I like eating at regular restaurants, too.

I have a good Chinese Resturant nearby. It's been rated the #1 Western Style Chinese Resturant for 3 years now. Needless to say, although it isn't completely authentic, it still tastes really good. They also have a seperate menu for people who want to eat something more traditional, but it's not in English.

Edit: That is, #1 in Calgary.

Buffet restaurants themselves can be hit or miss... but Chinese buffets are quite bad. Ordering from them is always the best idea since the food's actually fresh unlike what you find in those big bins.

There's a Chinese buffet in Bangor called Happy China Buffet. Over the years, they've gotten a lot better, but it's always been one of my favorite ever places to eat. It's really got a lot of wonderful memories behind it and each visit is always thoroughly enjoyable to me.

Good friends, good food, that's what that place is all about. I'll honestly feel like crying if it ever shuts down.

I remember when I was really young there was a Chinese buffet place I really liked as well.. unfortunately it did end up closing, I remember being really unhappy about it at the time. (It was at one of those places where you have restaurants just constantly moving in and out, though, so I suppose it was predictable that it would follow

Man, I love Chinese food. If I could eat only one kind of food for the rest of my life, it would be Czech, but Chinese is a close 3rd or 4th.

Chinese food is very nice. Just recently, a new Chinese restaurant opened here (I wonder for how long), I tried it and it's wonderful. They do tend to make large portions though.

Finally, I got around to renaming and organizing my Firefox bookmarks.

Edit: Here's a pic First categories, then really commonly-accessed Web sites, then something, then random bookmarks that I made recently of pages I might want to randomly refer to later. (And part of my Twitter stream, mostly because I was too lazy to open a blank tab or crop the image.)
