Simply amazing!

The PaperPhone is flexible and can be controlled by being bent, written on or used as a touchscreen.

The PaperPhone, built to determine how people use a flexible device, is a collaboration between researchers from Queen’s University in Kingston, Canada, Arizona State University, USA, researchers from the E-Ink Corporation.

“This is the future. Everything is going to look and feel like this within five years,” Roel Vertegaal, director of the human media lab at Queen’s, said. “This computer looks, feels and operates like a small sheet of interactive paper.”

The epaper sheet, which uses the same e-Ink technology found in the Amazon Kindle ereader, is just millimetres thick and can be used to make phone calls, read ebooks and play music.

The researchers say that this technology could eventually mean the end of paper and printers. Dr Vertegaal said: “The paperless office is here. Everything can be stored digitally and you can place these computers on top of each other, just like a stack of paper.”

The PaperPhone will be displayed at the Association of Computing Machinery’s CHI 2011 conference in Vancouver, Canada, on May 10.

I am amazed ... I can't help but wonder how this will change the way we look at technology.

I like it.

Not sure if it'll replace everything in just 5 years, given the probable cost and all, though. But possibly in a few generations.

Pretty soon, things will become so small, If you put it down, you'll never find it again.

I have to say, judging by the picture, using a flexible screen like that seems a little more awkward than using a traditional rigid touchscreen device... I suppose you'd probably get used to it pretty fast, though.

iPaper! The newest innovation from Apple! Oops, you ripped it! No more iPaper!

More seriously, I don't think the next gen HAS to be paper thin, but they'll probably take advantage of how thin it can be to make things more convenient.

“This is the future. Everything is going to look and feel like this within five years,” Roel Vertegaal, director of the human media lab at Queen’s, said.
Unless they can drastically improve the display technology within those five years, I don't think I want all my handheld gadgets to look and feel like a Kindle.

The researchers say that this technology could eventually mean the end of paper and printers.
I love how they make these ridiculous predictions every time a prototype of some new technology is demonstrated. Are people and businesses really just going to up and throw away cheap, permanent hard copies of documents in favor of a stack of e-papers? Can they guarantee these things will be readable 100 years from now?

Paulguy's Post configuration
Nope, I don't like it.

I can't see it being comfortable to hold, or use on anything but a flat surface, and it's moving even further from physical buttons that you can feel without having to look, and eeach for quickly, and feel reliably when you've pushed them.

The thing I find most weird about this is that it has a case. I mean really, putting a case on paper?

Here is the video demonstration:

<object style="height: 390px; width: 640px"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Rl-qygUEE2c?version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="640" height="390"></object>

I really don't see this catching on for mainstream media devices. E-Ink works great for E-book readers. Thats it. Until they get this to have full color and 300+ DPI, it will not be in my iPhone :smugdra:
