The Hobbit is the only one which didn't cause me to fall asleep from reading it. It was okay but fairly generic to me.

Wheel of Time is where it's at for me.

Isn't the Lord of the Rings technically six books, with each "volume" consisting of two books?

I haven't read them in several years, but IIRC I liked Fellowship of the Ring the best.

Return of the king, don't ask why I liked it, it just hit a literary note with me.

Kruto you have gained +5 to awesome for this.

I didn't really care for the LotR books, though I did enjoy some of The Hobbit

I've read The Hobbit several times over the years.

I've read each LoTR book exactly once. I did enjoy them reasonably well... they're just... rather slow.

If I recall correctly, the Hobbit was written last, at which point Tolkein had much more writing skills. Therefore it isn't too surprising it beats the boredom factories that preceded it. :p

Edit: No, it came out first but was altered later. Whatever the case, it was written better than those after it--perhaps he got unleashed without an editor to reign him in...
