Amidst all of America's Bin Laden partying, we were voting, and holy shit...

Liberals dropped the ball big time. 34 seats. Bloc did too, with only 3

Biggest surprise? NDP getting over 100.

Oh yeah, and Conservatives got a majority too.

Well, at least we got a MAJORITY Government instead of a MINORITY.

I'm still peeved about the Conservatives getting back in though.

I'm happy to see the NDP go up in the world, just too bad they couldn't have done the completely impossible and won outright.

But I'm not Canadian and so you should probably disregard my opinion as I probably have no clue what I am talking about. :p

I don't like the Conservative majority. Now I have to put up with Harper for four more years. Just great. I hope he actually bothers to listen to the other parties instead of ramming through whatever laws he sees fit.

I *LOVE* what happened in Quebec though. The Bloc Quebecois is dead as a political party. I'm not saying that sovereignty is dead - they can push that through the PQ and Marois has more power now - but it made absolutely no sense to have a federal party pushing that agenda and taking up real estate in the House of Commons. I don't think anyone called the NDP destroying everyone in Quebec, but...

To be honest, I don't dislike the Conservative. But I wouldn't been happy with ANY majority, right now.

Hm- if the Bloc Quebecois is dead as a federal party, that seems like a major re-alignment of Canadian politics. More majority governments in the future? (Note: I'm not Canadian)

A socialist party almost won in Canada, can we have that happen here, please?

Is it better to have a socialist party almost win but have the conservatives actually win, or having a somewhat-left-leaning-centrist party actually win?

Given how useless both the Liberals and the Democrats have been in doing things, I'd take the socialist party in second over an ineffective, easily defeated barely left party.

The Liberals need to go back to the drawing board. New leadership and some fresh ideas should help - and they have 4 years to figure that out. They'd be screwed even more if this ended up as a minority AND they lost so many seats. That would mean another election in 2 years (give or take a few months) and they wouldn't be ready for that at all.

Seriously. It's not even something that works "in theory". Considering that "in theory" you could manage to get EVERY seats with only a few votes more than another party.

Wonder why people aren't voting more? What's the point when your vote is likely to MEAN nothing

(edit: see also: UK in 2005)

A cartoon which represents the recent turn of events.

It's just too bad there isn't any NDP to vote for down here.

Ok, as much as I hate people assuming that Stephen Harper will abuse his majority, I found that cartoon very funny.
