Pretty much what Magic: The Gathering did. New rules... All the time
Pokemon got this way, too. After the Gym packs came out, some old cards started to become broken and overpowered for tournament play. It wasn't anywhere near as bad as Magic, which has like 152 expansions... But I think there were a few Pokemon cards banned from tournaments and a few combos not allowed.
It was less individual cards and more entire sets, but that happens in Magic too I believe. The only single cards I can think of that were banned were Birthday Pikachu and Ancient Mew. The former would require birthday verification for its attack, and the latter is... not easy to read, and has a distinct card back. Birthday Pikachu was pretty weak on any other day, and Ancient Mew sucked AFAIK, so it wasn't that big a deal.
Of course, nothing was stopping you from playing without those set limitations, quite a few people did play Unlimited. I had an amusing little Rain Dance deck, updated for Neo block, that I used online. Of course, certain new cards have rendered the old version completely obsolete...

I started with Pokemon, like many others. This was eventually replaced by Yu-Gi-Oh! and that was replaced by Legend of the Five Rings. I dabbled a bit in the WoW TCG as well, but stopped playing when I placed first at my first tourney, I felt accomplished after that. Daspien decks are horrendously powerful.

wow, nice, you da man!
As for me, I used to play a lot of Pokemon Cards, skipped Yugioh (didn't really enjoy it as much as everyone else did for some reason) and fell in love with Magic! On occasion, I look back at my Pokemn cards (all stuffed neatly in a dusty old binder thing) for nostaliga. I miss playing those..
