Threads are a limited resource, they need to be conserved.

If there are a lack of threads, the forum would use its own energy to stay alive, therefore eating itself.
Would you like that?

We could always recycle the old threads.

As it turns out, recycling threads and posts is bad for the forums.

When it comes to threads, the amount of effort required to find the old thread, read it over, and make a new post that is relevant to either the original subject or the topic that was being discussed when it died and has enough new content that it is not considered simple thread necromancy is far more effort than it would take to just make a new thread. (Recycled threads are also generally of a lower quality than new ones.)

For posts, it's pretty much the same deal, but there's also the fact that the vast majority of new posts come from subjects specifically selected for the facilitation of posts, just like how the vast majority of YouTube comments are made on videos made specifically to encourage discussion (or other text-based interactions). Therefore, by lowering the need for new posts by recycling old ones, there will ultimately be fewer subjects in existence, as there will be fewer brought up to meet the anticipated need.

We also have plenty of space left for threads (Jul produces enough threads in approximately 4 years to use 12772 thread IDs, 3.729% of the total posts of the board), which create discussions that are utilized to create posts within said threads. They can also be placed into forums such as Display Case and Trash once they are finished.

Due to all of this, I "saved" the forums by not recycling any posts or threads today.

P.S. For those who are curious, recycling memes breaks at about even with introducing new memes, and recycling forum games takes far less effort than thinking up new forum games, so not all recycling is bad for the forums.

But you're recycling a post right now! =o
