I absolutely hate it when people post bmp files on the internet. Hello, this is an uncompressed format, it takes ages to download!

Even better are those guys who just rename the file extension to .jpg and think they're done there. I mean, c'mon, even Paint can properly convert pictures.

.bmp files take a while to load even on DSL.

Also, people who use .jpg for things like screenshots of 8-bit games I used to do that back when I didn't know the difference between graphics formats.

PNGs do the lossless thing without eating all the space. BMPs just kind of sit there and eat up all the space.

I have a bigger problem with jpgs used on digital artwork with crisp defined lines. They end up having more artifacts than a British archaeological museum.

And then there are those people who literally paste an image into paint without bothering to remove the white border.

The result looks very stupid.

BMP files load backwards, so at least they end up looking kind of neat.

Wouldn't JPEG files be the vinyl of the internet? With JPEG artifacts being the equivalent of needle scratchiness.

if you like vinyls, i am okay with that

if you prefer vinyl over cd, i am okay with that too (and i would be interested in hearing why)

but if you claim vinyl is a technology superior to cd, i am not okay with that

I hate the misconception that some people think all AVI files are uncompressed. Um, wouldn't an uncompressed 1080p HD video file eat up like an entire SD card rather quickly? ;P

AVI is merely a container format, not a video format per se... it could fit XVid, MPEG-4, HuffYUV or Lagarith, for example

Actually, no MPEG-4 audio or video should go in AVI. It turns out the ancient AVI format needs a lot of very shoddy hacks in order to store MPEG-4. (The designers of MPEG-4 were aware of this; that's why we have MP4 files.)

Paulguy's Post configuration
Yeah, BMP is weird and mostly useless nowadays. Was there any reason for the reverse order of lines, or was it to avoid being to similar to other formats, or keeping things incompatible?

Another thing that annoys me is broken video files and broken video containers? What are these bizarre random codecs and muxers people find that produce this crap? Then there's also the crap that digital cameras/camcorders produce, even expensive ones. Luckily we have mplayer and VLC that tends to play most anything, no matter how broken it is.

this. Why in the world anyone in this day and age would willingly format their music to a vinyl is beyond me. Especially since vinyl pressing plants are few and far between...hell, they probably only still exist so indie bands can put stuff out the cost of production must be absolutely astounding. I know how a good portion of the recording industry still swears by analog, but really...

Fffffffffff oh gosh.

I dislike jpg/jpeg format, I somehow see lots of imperfections in the images. Then others call me crazy. I always convert as much as possible to .png, unless I'm lazy.

jpeg is rather godlike for photos, where the artifacts will be barely noticeable.

But it doesn't really work for as well for many computer generated images.

Especially sprites.
