RIP Flip Camera, 2008–2011

I never had one myself, but they were like the hot tech gadget in 2009 and 2010. Very popular with teens and early twenty-somethings, the Flip cameras were the choice for Facebook/YouTube videos. I'd have to say, even my Lumix and Olympus digital cameras take better video than the Flip (and at least they have optical zoom, but they only shoot in 480p)... and AFAIK the Flip couldn't even take still photos

The Flip was also rather expensive, too... I've seen clones of it on sale at places like Big Lots and Kmart for like $30-$50

What are your thoughts on the demise of the Flip? I'd have to say that Cisco made a good call here, especially with the appearance of lower-cost cameras with more features, as well as camera phones that can take VGA video or better

It honestly seems really sudden to me- I know that it was doomed in any case because of cell-phone cameras getting better, but still, it seemed like for the type of people who don't have a high-end phone and just want something simpler than those mini-cassette portable cameras, it worked really well. (My parents have one and love it- much to my displeasure )

Also, I really never understood why Cisco bought a company that made video cameras of all things. I've seen it claimed that Cisco killing the Flip is more a "dramatic gesture" than a necessity demanded by the economics of the division...

I have to admit, I still really like the nifty "flip" of the flip phone. However, the one I had, just...oh God, just terrible screen issues with the thing after a while and I wanted to go throw the thing out a window.

The new one I have is nice though!

Just another reason why I absolutely despise corporate buyouts.

(I don't own a Flip, I've just been burned numerous times in the past by corporate shenanigans)

This might sound really bad, but... I never heard of the Flip. I don't think I've ever SEEN a Flip. Granted, Cisco probably isn't the best fit for a developer like that, but still...

Then again, I use my iPod Nano for video recording if need be. :\ It does the job.

Paulguy's Post configuration
I've seen a review on the flip (didn't ashens do one?) and the quality just wasn't worth the resolution. People are stupid and only respond to larger numbers, so HD is certainly profitable, but stuff like noise and light sensitivity and stuff are harder to market. I'd honestly prefer a good 480p camera over a shitty 1080p camera. Another thing to note is even on relatively good cameras, the sensors tend to be something less like 1440x1080. Usable consumer-level HD is just not available, and probably won't be for a while... and honestly is unnecessary. I'm honestly appalled at the quality of most cameras nowadays, though. Digital is still nowhere near film for similar cost.

Canon DSLRs are actually very good at video. They're not entry level priced like the Flips were, but they aren't out of reach of the average consumer. The 60D is a prime example. Its $999 with a 18MP sensor and full 1080p resolution. They offer the flexibility of choosing your own lens, as well. I've seen some impressive videos shot with the 60D and its big brothers, the 5D and 7D. Cinema quality really.

The video from my iPhone 4 at 720p is decent given that its from a phone. And I think thats the main reason behind the demise of Flip phone *back on topic*. Almost every phone these days comes with a camera and web access to directly upload to youtube and facebook. Why would you want to lug around another mediocre camera when you can just use your phone? The only downside to phone videos is that you're basically holding the camera by its lens and camera shake is inevitable. There isn't really any room for stabilization features in such a small form factor.

The only advantages that a dedicated video camera would have would be quality and battery life. If both are comparable to devices like cell phones or iPhones, then what's the point? :\ If you're offering the same features, then you still have to offer something that your competitors can't match.

I'd think that it would be very important. I mean, battery life on most smartphones isn't amazing. And videos don't help =\

Heh, yeah, I always take out my film camera and take pictures, then freak people out with the uber-huge resolutions I can scan the film at.

Just look at the picture in my layout--I scanned that one in at that huge resolution, making it work even on ultra-HD monitors. Meanwhile, a digital SLR that could do that would probably cost some megabucks--while it cost me $2 to develop the film and that was it. It'd cost me even less next time as I can scan my own film--so maybe $4 total with the cost of the film initially factored in.
