 | I'm on windows 7 using just a standard cheap wired logitech optical mouse that's not even that old. A few weeks ago, it started giving me a bunch of random bizarre issues that have been increasing in frequency ever since. It's at the point now where I can barely get any work done without the mouse screwing me over.
For instance, sometimes when I click, the mouse will have a period where it's acting like either every click I make is a right click, or a right and left click at the same time. Then there are times when it seems hyper sensitive and treats nearly every click I make as several consecutive clicks which usually ends up opening programs I don't want to open, or makes it impossible for me to rename music files without playing them by mistake. It also makes toggling checkboxes on and off nearly impossible. This is the most frequent thing and really pisses me off. Then I'll be typing, and every time I click in an above paragraph so I can add a sentence or something, it will either refuse to click in the right place, or move some text up with it, or delete text which completely jacks up my paragraph.
The weirdest thing I've just had happen though was very temporary, but very bizarre. I was just browsing the web like normal when all a sudden, my scroll wheel wouldn't scroll. Instead, it kept zooming the page in and out. As if that wasn't weird enough, when I clicked on the desktop, it started doing the same thing with my desktop icons so I know it wasn't a browser thing. I clicked everywhere trying to get it to stop, but it did it regardless of what program I was in. Then all of a sudden, it started working again. The whole thing only lasted about a minute and I have no idea what I could have done to switch it on or off.
So yeah, this is really irritating. I also have a tablet, and I figured that it might be interfering with the mouse, so I disconnected it. I don't have any other form of input device besides the mouse. Any ideas on how to get it back to normal? Oh, and I already went into control panel and set the double click speed down as low as it could go. It still like to treat single clicks as double or triple click at complete random.

| I'm not really comfortable with opening up the mouse, but I guess I can try blowing between the buttons in case some weird stuff got in there. I don't think water has ever been spilled on it.
I'm trying to see if there is a solution to this besides buying a new mouse because this same problem has happened to me with the past 2 mice I have bought. One was another Logitech, and the other was a Microsoft mouse. They all work fine for about a year or 2 or so, and then they start acting increasingly bizarre. Since I've replaced the last two mice due to this, I'm thinking there must be some underlying problem.
I just uninstalled the driver and let Microsoft re-detect it and install the default one again. So far I haven't had any more issues, but this is a very sporadic thing so I don't know if it is really fixed yet or not. It may only be temporarily behaving.

I have reason to wonder if it's the mouse that's doing it. Seems like Windows 7's implementation of the input code might be faulty.
Unfortunately I don't think there's a fix for that.

Usually this is what happens when you hold Control and scroll. Assuming you didn't have your hand or anything else possibly resting on the Control key, it could be a keyboard or OS problem. Not sure how a mouse would delete text out of nowhere by itself, either. Moving text could mean it's mistakenly interpreting a drag instead of a click.
I've had a lot of mice get "dyslexic", as I call it, where they think I'm right-clicking when I'm left-clicking. I'm starting to think that's just an OS bug as it has happened with a lot of mice for me. So yeah, I'm with MM88 in blaming the OS, but it might also have to do with the keyboard. ____________________

| | | | | Gunk in the switches would not cause the majority of those issues. You probably have a faulty mouse that is sending bad data to the OS. It's happened to me a couple of times.
Don't bother taking it apart; modern optical mice don't really have many user-serviceable parts inside. Your best bet is to just buy another cheap mouse (one that can be returned if necessary) and see if the problems go away.

I've seen mice with zoom functions. Windows 7's mouse driver probably has built-in support for these features (just like XP's standard driver supported scroll wheels and back/forward buttons), so it's possible that bad data packets from the mouse could be triggering them.

| Well, I did notice that there was quite a bit of cat hair at the bottom of the mouse and around the sensor, so I did my best to get it out. Didn't really make much difference though. I've noticed a lot fewer problems since I reinstalled the drivers, but I'm still getting the double click things every once in a while. While not completely solved, at least now it's at a tolerable level and isn't nearly as bad as it was. I'll try switching the USB ports later to see if that helps too.
