Believe it or not, MS-DOS Editor still exists in Windows 7.

I use it from time to time. Notepad++ for anything coding related (save C++, which is dev-cpp... sigh, locked to Windows sucks)

I tried "edit meow.txt" from cmd, and it said it wasn't a recognized command.

Visually impaired people tend to use better software for this purpose.

As for useless software, uh... I honestly don't use Windows enough, though I guess I'd have to say all the random little utilities they ripped off unix a loooong time ago and never ever updated so they're pretty useless compared to their modern counterparts. (Bit off topic but I recall seeing grep.exe on a windows xp media center edition 2005 machine I was repairing. Off topic because given a shell that isn't garbage, it's a useful program.)

The least useful for me is Windows Defender. It got installed on my computer through a auto update in November and It has done nothing. Apparently it is suspossed to act as an anti spyware/malware tool, but My norton anti-virus gets everything first.

My dad's only Tandy 1000 had Edlin as its only editor.

I think in those days, most people used word processors as text editors. The equivalent of opening a configuration file or writing code in Microsoft Word or OpenOffice.org Writer.

Runner-up is System Restore. In all my time of using Windows, it has successfully restored a previous state only one time. In addition those restore points by default end up eating a large chunk of disk.


I found it useful for jotting down hex color values I need to copy over to another program. But since I only had to use it once and notepad can do the same thing then yeah.

Notepad. Seriously it's virtually unchanged since, what, Win95?

Paint's gotten better. Calculator's pretty nice, now, too. Defrag is a step backwards (though 3rd party applications are still "better", however subjective that may be.)

Did anyone even use Notepad back in the 3.1 days, or was edit.com still the norm back then? Paint used to be called "Paintbrush" in the 3.1 days too

The current Notepad has some improvements- larger files than it used to, plus it uses Lucida Console instead of Fixedsys.

Actually, I use Notepad for most of my text-editor needs... but I usually don't need to do anything too fancy.

Paintbrush was actually far different from the Windows 95-and-later Paint. I actually remember a lot of the differences offhand; 3.1 had more brush shapes, for example, as well as a brush/line thickness selector in the bottom left. In addition, the spraycan used fixed patterns instead of randomly dumping dots everywhere.

The Vista/7 Paint replacements (at least, 7's) also removed a few of the hidden features from the earlier versions.

Paintbrush was fun. When I was little, I'd used to spend hours scribbling around, zooming in and kind of exploring the "tunnels" like a maze. A good replacement for having an internet connection and games and not much else to do!
