Well, I can say this will lead to some interesting moral debates. I myself think that this is a great advance in science, but could lead to some unpleasant things down the line. Although, that's very down the line, considering how long it probably took them to make it, and how simple it is, providing, as they said, only the very basics. Although, once somethings been done, automating it wouldn't actually be too difficult, ignoring cost anyway, which is not something to ignore. I must agree with what the head of the Canadian Bioethics organization said though, society and politics are a bit behind for this one.

But yeah, this is pretty cool stuff I guess. Yay science, and the controveries that are certainly going to come with this one

So how long until we can buy a catgirl?

I just hope they don't fuck up and create a supervirus or grey goo.

Considering the amount of effort it apparently took to make 1/5 of bacterial DNA, I doubt we'll be seeing anything major (like a catgirl, catdog, etc.) anytime soon.

But when they do make a catgirl, my money's on Japan for making it.

In 2 posts no less! It's a new record!

On topic: I'm actually feeling a little scared of all the progresses we are making. I'm almost sure that we are sooner or later gonna mess up badly with this. But until you might as well then bring on the catgirls!

Wow. Just wow. This isn't epic, but it's awesome.

Also, something harder is memorizing ASM when you're half asleep, wanting to play SSBM.

That reminds me....

Not perverts. We just see catgirls as moe.

And making life isn't really that new, is it? I mean, we have already cloned sheep which in turn is creating life, right?

Nice that it has to be described down to 'synthetically creating a chromosome that was painstakingly weaved together of 580,000 strands...'

It's just a little bit different than animal cloning.

I'll just reiterate what I said when I was first introduced to the topic: "cue superhuman tests, also cue annihilation"

Oh well.

Geez, lighten up. Stem cell research is a different area of biology than genetics for a very important reason: the smallest machinery on Earth isn't capable of producing a stem cell. In order to create some kind of intelligent life with enhanced attributes, we'd need to mess around with the atoms themselves.

No, I'm more interested in the applications of organic machinery. Imagine, a car that could heal itself when the timing chain breaks...

Course the same logic could be applied to a tank. Then again, you could start pulling some T-1000 stuff from The Terminator at that point. Get the hot lava ready.

And if 'timing chain heal' were capable in cars, you can bet the price of those and parts for a car would skyrocket to the point of unaffordability if it was made available now, let's say. Might just be a little ahead of our time for now. It'd be one heck of a convenience...but one would wonder then if your car starts getting car cancer. Now that'd be fucked up.

Then again, I could see the major news networks jumping on a car epidemic like 9/11.
