| It happened to my DS lite less than a year ago. First it didn't matter, but later the screen didn't stay fixed properly, which was annoying because it fell to the closed position while you were playing way too often... And even later I guess the ribbon cable became loose, because sometimes the top screen went black.
I had to get a replacement case and install it 
And I also have the common issue of L and R not working. |

Yeah, this happened to my DS Lite around this time last year, too, and I had it since the DS Lite was released in Japan (and I took fucking great care of it too ).
Apparently Nintendo said they'd give free repairs to hinge cracks back in 2006. I don't know if this still applies now, but if it does, I'm totally going to get mine repaired. :T It's worth researching. Please tell us what you find! so the rest of us with the cracked hinges can get ours fixed too. ____________________ βSofi |

There are always exceptions of course, but most people I know with DS lite system have the same shoulder button issue. At least the DSi XL I picked up as a replacement seam to have far better quality! :3 ____________________ |

Paulguy's Post configuration I had a DS lite that really got played the shit out of over a year, and it definitely showed. bottom screen was a mess (I didn't have a protector for it.), L button was completely useless, sound only worked through the headphone jack, and it was just generally worn out. Lots of scuffs and stuff. Also, it did have the hinge problem due to dropping it. ____________________ |

I actually once heard that the hinge issues may be colour-dependent. I've had my black DS lite for over 4.5 years (got it when it was first released in Europe in June 2006) and the hinge is still fine.
It does have other issues, though... the cartridge slot is extremely worn, the sound no longer works, and the bottom screen is quite scratched. The R button is a little iffy at this point, but I'm pretty sure that's Mario Kart's fault... For some reason, I preferred the original DS's design (and clicky buttons) to the Lite. The smushy buttons are tolerable, but nowhere as good. I just can't stand the extremely dark screens on the original DS. Yeah, it doesn't look as sleek as the DS lite or anything, but I actually like that design more. |
