Picture of my own hinge crack.

Is this still really common? I turned up a lot about it being frequent in 2006... And of course mine cracks on the worse of the two hinges - this is how my first DS Lite died. I also hope repair is cheap... I'd rather not have to use my 3DS for original DS games, the screen seems a bit... different.

I didn't seem to turn much newer stuff on this up.

This is why you take care of your things.

Aside from a few scratches here and there from accidentally dropping them, my DS Brick and DSi are perfectly fine.

That's the thing - I did take good care of it!

The first one's demise was due to a hinge crack too, although that one did suffer a nasty drop once when a bus I was on took an absolutely stupidly wide turn that threw most of the people a bit. This one still works, but I'm very hesitant to use it.

However, I don't ever remember dropping this DS. From the older results I turned up it seemed to be an issue with the hinge itself.

Oh.

Huh. That does sound weird.

Sorry for coming off as a jerk, though.

It happened to my DS lite less than a year ago. First it didn't matter, but later the screen didn't stay fixed properly, which was annoying because it fell to the closed position while you were playing way too often... And even later I guess the ribbon cable became loose, because sometimes the top screen went black.

I had to get a replacement case and install it

And I also have the common issue of L and R not working.

Yeah, this happened to my DS Lite around this time last year, too, and I had it since the DS Lite was released in Japan (and I took fucking great care of it too ).

Apparently Nintendo said they'd give free repairs to hinge cracks back in 2006. I don't know if this still applies now, but if it does, I'm totally going to get mine repaired. :T

It's worth researching. Please tell us what you find! so the rest of us with the cracked hinges can get ours fixed too.

The DS Lite is a cheap, flimsy piece of crap. Despite looking like it's been through hell and back, my original DS still works just as well as the day I bought it.

^ It really is, which is a huge shame. :/

Both of my shoulder buttons are terribly broken. And it does not help that so many games use them a lot. (which is why I mostly only play RPGs on it anymore. )

I visited a Gamestop and asked on my way home from college classes today (it was on the way home, so why not?). Apparently it'll cost $75 or something for repair - I've also turned up a thread on Nintendo's forums stating the same price.

It's a shame the DS Lite's hinge and button quality is so poor - aside from that, the thing is a huge success (incredible battery life if you turn down brightness, apparently... excellent screens... though I'd have to have an original DS right beside the Lite to really compare).

I'm thinking of looking into ways to fix the hinge myself, if possible... worst comes to worst, I'll probably just grab up a cheap original DS if I ever see one. Repair just seems far too expensive, especially when I'm trying to keep a hold of money for something else.

e: Also worth mentioning: when I was grabbing a used DS, I had to return two because of shoulder button defects too. The 3DS has decent-feeling shoulder buttons, at least...

I got my DS Lite in 2006, it works just as well as the day I bought it and looks good doing so. (Though I did lose the original stylus and the one that's in there now is the wrong color) Maybe I've just been lucky...

There are always exceptions of course, but most people I know with DS lite system have the same shoulder button issue. At least the DSi XL I picked up as a replacement seam to have far better quality! :3

This. The DS Phat is more like a DS Tank. Dropped it a couple times, and spilled Monster over the left side of it, and it still works perfectly. L button doesn't respond as well as the R button due to use and said Monster and requiring to get inside it for deep cleaning, but it still feels like it'll function for a while.

Also, I have the same issue with buttons not responding for the Start/Select buttons on one of the SNES controllers I have. After some goofing around I learned that the circuit board is just fine. It's just that there needs to be a new rubber contact between the button itself and the circuit board. But it's easier to gut other electronics for a button-shaped contact than a full start/select button unless we're going to be involving a thrift store.

I've had my DS Lite for ~4 years and haven't had any problems with it.

Yet.

Well, other than the screen getting dirty.

Paulguy's Post configuration
I had a DS lite that really got played the shit out of over a year, and it definitely showed. bottom screen was a mess (I didn't have a protector for it.), L button was completely useless, sound only worked through the headphone jack, and it was just generally worn out. Lots of scuffs and stuff. Also, it did have the hinge problem due to dropping it.

My handhelds seem to survive surprisingly well; though there are some things which might have broken, there's nothing which impedes gameplay in any way.

Obviously, the Nintendium in my old Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance and Gameboy Advance SP have lived for years, and my DS seems to follow the trend and doesn't have anything wrong with it (other than the tape underneath peeling off and it having so much dust). DS Lite's hinge is still good, though there are two things: the left speaker doesn't work (but who cares, Mono and/or headphones) and sometimes the top screen blanks out (but jiggling the hinges a bit fixes it).

My brother's two DS handhelds, on the other hand... The "phat" one broke its right hinge after he dropped it and the top got horribly scratched right after when he stepped and slipped on it by accident, dragging it along the basement's concrete floor. As for the lite, he dropped it once on a big rock at the beach last summer and now there's two giant scratches, the L and R buttons don't work very well and (somehow) the D-pad isn't much better. ...The lite's hinge is actually in very good condition, though.

I actually once heard that the hinge issues may be colour-dependent. I've had my black DS lite for over 4.5 years (got it when it was first released in Europe in June 2006) and the hinge is still fine.

It does have other issues, though... the cartridge slot is extremely worn, the sound no longer works, and the bottom screen is quite scratched. The R button is a little iffy at this point, but I'm pretty sure that's Mario Kart's fault...

For some reason, I preferred the original DS's design (and clicky buttons) to the Lite. The smushy buttons are tolerable, but nowhere as good. I just can't stand the extremely dark screens on the original DS. Yeah, it doesn't look as sleek as the DS lite or anything, but I actually like that design more.

The DS Phat I own finally busted its small hinge part after I had been playing it continuously from launch to now. 6 years does a number on it.

This claim is perfectly reasonable.

I have a white original DS that may have come from Singapore (or some other place) and the plastic is very brittle. It hasn't been abused beyond accidentally being dropped, but two corners have broken, and I'm pretty sure the R button is held in entirely by the pieces of plastic I managed to tape back onto it. The hinge is perfectly fine, though, and it still works great.

Interesting. My DS Lite happens to be black

Although now I'm somewhat worried about the DS's possible future deterioration.
