And yet "ain't" still isn't a word. WTF? At least I have an inarguable retort that will piss off the purists now.

"Ain't" is a word, but it's often misused. It is the contraction of "am not", so "I ain't going anywhere" is correct, but something like "she ain't going anywhere" (i.e., "she am not going anywhere") is not.

And yeah, LOL and OMG are certainly commonly enough known by now to be words.

As for ♥, some dictionaries I've seen have a list of symbols and their meanings, or it could be alphabetized as the word "heart".

Well, can't forget loan words. We have karaoke and wasabe and stuff already so it's not too crazy to think of.

Also, I haven't heard people use meep until recently.

Sounds like whoever edits the dictionary did a little derping themself. Good chance some herping was involved, too.

no but really, while it is a natural progression of the English language and all, the fact that someone can now justify the use of LOL as a word in actual, physical conversation makes me want to slap the first person I hear use it

I can't imagine that Rick will be too happy about these additions, people like me would intentionally use them in essays. :smugdra:

My English teacher must be on crack then. That's what I've been saying for years and they all look at me like I'm a weirdo. Curse Ohio's crappy educational system! There is a difference between something not being a word, and using a word in a way that is grammatically incorrect.

While we're at it,

Ain't is also nonstandard in some dialects, so if you brought it up to a teacher, they'd just inform you that they ain't teachin' you that kind of dialect.

I worry for when that day will come.

Also I remember my 3rd grade teacher being so adamant in hating 'ain't' that she didn't want any of us to use it period. Of course she was a pretty cool teacher otherwise so we let that little quirk go.

Most dictionaries will say "ain't" is informal or slang, so while it may be a word, it'd be inappropriate to use in an essay or something/

Oxford? The same morons who declared "noob" to be the 1,000,000th word added to the English language?

Someone over there needs to be fired, seriously.

oh my god. I really, really hope someone can fit "LOL" legitimately in to an MLA-standards compliant essay. I think my life will be complete.
