Windows's antialiasing just tends to be very sharp, trying to round to the nearest pixel for mostly straight portions, the opposite of Apple antialiasing (which I honestly prefer the more "bolder, softer" look; freetype's can be adjusted in a similar way.). EDIT: Maybe it's not antialiased, but the "sharp" effect of windows's antialaising is still true, so it's honestly kind of hard to tell when it's applied or not. Yes. Windows always does anti-aliasing (take a screenie and zoom in very closely to see it). I'm pretty sure it's turned off in this image, but I totally agree about how bleh ClearType can be. A lot of the pixels look totally hammered in.
If you guys like OSX rendering better, you can try using GDI++, which just re-renders all of the on-screen text using the algorithm/filter/whatever OSX uses for its fonts. I used to run this on my laptop when I had Windows on it and it made things look a lot nicer.
