I was filling out paperwork regarding my father's apartment complex, because a new tenant moved in. Everything seemed normal about her; job at a local supermarket, taking night courses to advance her career, stable relationship with someone, no criminal history...

Then it came to the part where I listed down information about family members who would be moving into the apartment with her. Just her and her 3 year old daughter, who's first and middle name is Ana Laura. I didn't think much of it until I was rereading the file to make sure I did everything correctly, then I noticed it: When writing a person's name, you usually do it in the format of "Last Name, First Name Middle Initial".

"Robertson, Ana L" stared back at me from the form. I couldn't help but laugh once I realized what I saw.

Anyone else know people who've got funky names or smartass parents who plan to name their children Richard Head or something?

I knew a Mohammed Ali in elementary school, but that may have been a coincidence.

I think "Mohammed Ali" is part of a naming scheme.

I bet the Ana L was totally coincidental.

My name was entirely accidentally almost the same as a Vietnam War general's name. Older people keep asking me if it was intentional, and I explain it was accidental.

...

Of course it probably doesn't help that I wear boots and a bomber jacket, or that I go around the internet acting like running forums is some sort of war simulation... :p

I can't say I've been confused for anyone famous.

However, my first job had a manager that has the same first AND last name as myself. Guess how confusing that got!

Apparently my name is rare, of English origin and I don't know anyone in real life with it. Nor have I ever met someone else. I'm glad mom named me the way she did, and didn't go for one of those overused Christian names everyone else in the neighborhood had used.

I was going to say Lance Bass, but it turns out his name is actually James.

So, how about Lance Armstrong?

Rayletha is a pretty stupid name too.

Reminds me of this girl I met at science camp when I was 12. Her name was Presley, and she once said she planned on naming her future child Potassium.

I am not making this up.

Some baby names these days seem rather dumb to me.

The worst probably being "Nevaeh". It's heaven spelled backwards, for fuck's sake. What will you name her siblings? Lleh? Sedah? Noitanracnier? Obmil?

Also, the Gaelic prefix "Mac" or "Mc" means "son of". Please stop giving little girls names like "McKenzie" or "McKenna".

THANK YOU.

Seriously, I am so sick of seeing names like that. Nevaeh is a particularly bad one.

And then, of course, there's this madness.

Anyone who considers naming their kid Espn or De'Liberately or Gherkin needs to be sterilized and also forbidden from adopting.

Can we ban the apostrophe from all baby names? Please please please?

Also...someone seriously named their kid Butterball? And Pumpkin? You're naming humans, not items of food!

I've heard of ESPN being a name. I wonder if any babies are named NBC, or Cartoon Network, or The History Channel.

When I have a daughter her name will be Pum'kin Cartoonetwork Obmil McDonald's Nickel.

(Kidding, obviously. But now I have to use that name for like a comic or something.)

Don't forget "Le-a".

Where you pronounce the dash.

Yup. Ledasha. Le-a.

Actually, that's more of a dumbass parent.

I've heard worse.

Like poor parents who go to the hospital for the first time and name their kid after some medical term that they thought sounded pretty, like "Vagina" or "Urethra".

Thankfully, the first one (Le-a) is probably an urban legend.

The second one (embarrassing medical terms used as names) is also probably an urban legend, but I've heard people who swear to God that they actually met a kid named Female (pronounced "fuh-MAL-ee") or what have you, and it seems more likely than the Le-a thing, so...that one could plausibly have happened at some point in time.

My first and middle initials spell "D.R.", though I'm pretty sure that was just coincidental on my parents' part...
