I really, really wish there was a good online image creator. All the ones I try like to break in new and exciting ways. (Your layers go boom!)

But yeah, discuss random computer silliness here.

I wish virus scan aren't going on forever. Even more annoying when you're playing a game, suddenly a virus scan come up! You can't take it away and everything you have done dont saves!

Virus scans usually aren't too much of a problem for me, other than the fact that ZoneAlarm likes to have my system slow to a crawl as a result, especially during the daily update.

But yeah, I really wish computers didn't slow down as bad as they do once they become not as new anymore. On the plus side at least it's not nearly as bad as computers built in the late 90's. SLOW CITY

I can't remember the last time I had one of those scareware major virus scanners installed. Norton and McAfee are both pieces of junk designed to get you to buy the latest and greatest version when they are the most vulnerable, and end up missing a lot of stuff that MSE, Avast!, or Malwarebytes will find easily. It's unfortunate that so many institutions force that kind of crap on you if you want to use their networks, though.

A virus scanner is barely necessary if you're updated, have an ad-blocking tool, and don't let any sites you don't trust run scripts. :p

(This has been an unofficial endorsement for AdBlock Plus and NoScript.)

I just use my Avast! and do a deep clean of what's running in the background every so often. No slowdown for me!

I do the same. Except once in a while Avast! pisses me off with update notices. It also forgets when gaming mode is on, but no surprise there. Not a single AV program has managed to remember it for me. Though Avast! also assumed that my DLC installer disc was malware.

I also do use ABP and NoScript. Rarely run a MBAM scan when my machine acts too funny for normal. Haven't had a virus or even a minor piece of malware for a while.

I didn't even used to run an antivirus, and was still virus free then. I only got it in wake of Conficker and having to guard against my memory stick being infected. But I disabled autorun now, so... yeah...

You can disable those. (Settings -> Updates -> Details -> "Show notification box", and Settings -> Sounds)

I always use antivirus, AdBlock, Spybot, and everything similar to avoid being infected (though false positives can be annoying *glares at YY-CHR *)

I'm using (Arch)Linux right now and everything that gets recorded keeps coming out distorted and lowered an octave or so, even in Skype. This makes me supersad because the other day my friend wanted to Skype with me and I couldn't.

I already looked up different solutions for it, so I've kind of given up on it.

General computer BS.

Mhm, I was trying to use Skype, and though it worked, it ate up so much CPU power that it couldn't keep up. After between a few minutes and a few seconds it would start cutting out horribly and/or drop the connection to my Bluetooth headset. Made it pretty well unusable.

My antivirus/general crapware protection system has several layers, in order from least to most important:
  • Linux, for which not much malware exists, and which is designed to be very secure;

  • AdBlock, which keeps out crap that might try to infect Firefox;

  • NoScript, which keeps out lots of crap that might try to infect Firefox;

  • General knowledge about computer security;

  • Common sense.

I kinda feel like computers should have a little status display area like Conky or Samurize, shipped with the OS and enabled by default, showing vital stats like CPU usage, memory/swap usage, disk space, and network activity, and people should be educated on what they mean and how to interpret them. (Mine also displays the top three processes for CPU, RAM and I/O, but that does take up a fair bit of space that wouldn't be terribly nice on smaller screens.) It's like the dashboard gauges in a car. Some just have a warning light that comes on once something's already gone wrong, but professionals prefer to have the actual gauges that can alert them to a potential problem before it actually occurs. And really, they're ridiculously easy to read and understand, much like the aforementioned stats. Cars are complex machines, computers are complex machines; both should be treated as such.

But like cars, most people don't care to learn anything about their computers so they go thousands of miles without even basic maintenance that everyone should know about, like oil changes. Some people are even resistant to learning the stuff; basically turning their brain off when you try to explain stuff in terms they would normally understand but don't care to know, so you get their computer back every few months because they got more viruses installed from going to bad porn sites. Even worse are the people who just expect it to do it for you. Do cars drive to the shop for you, automatically, when something is wrong? No, and they shouldn't be expected to. While a computer has somewhat more means than a car to deal with certain infections and whatnot, zero-day or relatively obscure or tricky infections are considerably harder to deal with without some common sense, where most of it is very avoidable, even without any kind of automated virus scanning.

Amen brother. I use a car analogy like this often as well.

When I first started fixing my friends and families computers because of all the crap they accumulate from flat out negligence to maintenance, I figured it was some easy money and a chance to impress em. After cleaning out all the crap as best I could I would always be sure to tip them on safe surfing habits, useful software to run occasionally and just general do s and don't s. I was not telling them to do anything a fourth grader couldn't do.

Yet time and time again, I get the same calls from the same people, "My comp is slow, I can't get into the internet, my file won't open..." It quickly gets old and extremely disappointing to learn that my sweet, seemingly intelligent family members simply DO NOT follow my simple tips and refuse to take even a minimally active role in keeping their shit working right.

Yeah, I've kinda gotten agitated with playing the family tech support of the laptop. It's not so bad with mom or my little sis, but my stepfather...holy shit. It's like trying to teach a brick how to tap dance.

One thing I do forget, however, is how to disable stuff on startup. Mostly I've forgotten because of Windows 7, and I can't remember the trick I heard off-handedly once. I got a few things I wanna disable on this thing on startup so it'll go quicker.

I'm becoming more and more of the family tech support person to my parents. mostly my mom, though. Dad's a tech guy himself (though not up with the times as well anymore), so luckily we can split the responsibility of mom's computer issues.

Type it into the search bar in the start menu or use the run dialog.

Doesn't that result in always booting in "diagnostic" mode? I'd say go right in to the registry and disable the entries from there... unfortunately Windows has so many bullshit ways for stuff to start up without your permission, it's pretty much impossible nowadays without a full reinstall to remove a lot of the crap.

No, at least not in Windows XP. It does pop up a dialog stating "you have used this utility to make changes to..." blah blah blah, but there's a checkbox you can untick that tells it not to appear next time you boot Windows.
