And what do you do if they come back with one of those sites that just copies Wikipedia's content, but are not technically Wikipedia?
Then I sit down with them for a couple of minutes and give 'em a good explanation on doing proper research.

This, ma'am, is exactly how one should do research using Wikipedia. Bravo! I would love to have you as a student.

I've looked for the page since, but I'm assuming it was deleted because I can't even find it with google site search.
Pages like that always kind of weirded me out, especially when they're deleted. There are so many random painstakingly prepared sites out there that just show up and then disappear. It's not so weird when it's for a workplace, though; it's super-weird when it's just a random isolated website made by some random person for no reason. And they're weirder the more anonymous the page comes off.
Anonymous dead livejournals are like online cemeteries.
Maybe I'm the one who's weird. :T ____________________ β Sofi

That's why Wikipedia can still be an excellent research tool - just be smart and check where the info's coming from. And then click on links from there until you hit paydirt.
(Of course, kids should still be aware of what a library is...)

| | Metal_Man88's Post | I just find some ancient books (the older the better), and go with them.
Most teachers look and see I used actual books and then more or less give an instant A, since no one else knows how to find them apparently.
Or a search engine, either. One professor was amazed I found out how many Ashanti people have refrigerators, using the internet (not wikipedia.) It was an official government factbook source, too!

Wow, I guess the government would know something like that, wouldn't they?
And holy shit, we were talking about this in one of my classes, and the person who sits next to me happens to volunteer at our schools Writing Department, who help people with papers. She said she heard one person tell another person (neither who worked there; thank god) that she should JUST MAKE UP A SOURCE. For a college level history course. Where we have extraordinarily competent professors and doctors teaching. My teacher, the head of the History department here, just kind of stared at her for a minute. |

I once used a really used document by the US Army that was about tests they did in the arctic.
Huge document. The teacher was probably like "wtf.... okay you get an A"
