Yeah, some Wikipedia vandalism can be hilarious. I used to keep a little archive of Wikipedia vandalism I found funny, but it wasn't very much because I stopped like right after I started. And the ones I picked weren't actually that funny!

Ho-hum.

And what do you do if they come back with one of those sites that just copies Wikipedia's content, but are not technically Wikipedia?

Then I sit down with them for a couple of minutes and give 'em a good explanation on doing proper research.

Proper research made easy! (by me)

1. Look up subject on Wikipedia
2. Look at reference section of page
3. ???
4. PROFIT!!!

A few weeks ago I clicked random page and it took me to a page named qwerty...vbnm (pretty much all the letters on the keyboard in order). The entire page consisted of paragraphs explaining how it changed the workplace because many bored workers decide to google it. The end of the page contained god knows how many references to irrelevant sites. The references page must have been about twice the length of the article. I've looked for the page since, but I'm assuming it was deleted because I can't even find it with google site search.

This, ma'am, is exactly how one should do research using Wikipedia. Bravo! I would love to have you as a student.

Fact: Research == "I'm Feeling Lucky" button on Google.

Pages like that always kind of weirded me out, especially when they're deleted. There are so many random painstakingly prepared sites out there that just show up and then disappear. It's not so weird when it's for a workplace, though; it's super-weird when it's just a random isolated website made by some random person for no reason. And they're weirder the more anonymous the page comes off.

Anonymous dead livejournals are like online cemeteries.

Maybe I'm the one who's weird. :T

That's why Wikipedia can still be an excellent research tool - just be smart and check where the info's coming from. And then click on links from there until you hit paydirt.

(Of course, kids should still be aware of what a library is...)

I think they know what a library is. A library is a place with public computers, printers, and copiers

They have armchairs, too, and they're usually right by a huge window. Perfect for a nice nap.

I just find some ancient books (the older the better), and go with them.

Most teachers look and see I used actual books and then more or less give an instant A, since no one else knows how to find them apparently.

Or a search engine, either. One professor was amazed I found out how many Ashanti people have refrigerators, using the internet (not wikipedia.) It was an official government factbook source, too!

Wow, I guess the government would know something like that, wouldn't they?

And holy shit, we were talking about this in one of my classes, and the person who sits next to me happens to volunteer at our schools Writing Department, who help people with papers. She said she heard one person tell another person (neither who worked there; thank god) that she should JUST MAKE UP A SOURCE. For a college level history course. Where we have extraordinarily competent professors and doctors teaching. My teacher, the head of the History department here, just kind of stared at her for a minute.

Oh, that's funny, but not entirely uncommon. My 7th grade history teacher admitted to making up sources for his thesis.

The word "Ashanti" still makes me think of the singer who was popular several years ago

I had a computer illiterate science teacher who required sources to be given for various research projects and whatnot. He accepted "google.com" as a source, because he didn't know that it was only a search engine

I once used a really used document by the US Army that was about tests they did in the arctic.

Huge document. The teacher was probably like "wtf.... okay you get an A"

Well that and the fact that I end up with more references that way and end up fulfilling the required amount of Internet resources in nothing flat. Books are a little trickier.

It would be easier if books had a search feature, and copy-paste to grab direct quotations.

That would be called destroying a book.

I always found books an easier resource than the net. But it's also a 35 minutes trip to Powell's from where I live, and was only a 5 minute trip from where I attended school. Every book imaginable in all fields! Even really, really old ones nobody would expect to be intact.

Then also had tons of libraries and other book stores that allowed reading them before buying.
