Do you have any sources that say that radiation is high enough at the plant that it is a suicide mission? I didn't realize it was at that level.

Mm, CB, you should probably list your sources in your update posts to save the trouble of people asking for them later. It'd probably prevent more of those little arguments that have sprouted in here. :U

tl;dr Laura Faust and a ton of other friends at Q POP are holding an online and real life art auction and donating all proceeds directly to hospitals and relief groups in Japan.

Can Do. Although the story of the workers staying behind was on the evening news.

There was also a lunatic on the evening news saying this was Chernobyl 2 and everyone in Tokyo was gonna die.

Don't be a fool. Not everything you hear on there is true.

OH BUT THIS IS A MOONSPEAK CARTOON SO IT'S AUTOMATICALLY INVALID TO US WESTERNERS. :specialed:

But yeah this is likely more informative (and fairly lighthearted) than what we're probably reading and watching over here.

That was incredibly cute and informitave. That probably makes it a little easier to understand than what the news is telling us. (It'll also help the children.)

To quote someone on another forum about that video:

You know, that short cartoon explained everything better than all the media outside Japan combined.

Also, I found this pretty neat and also pretty sad at the same time. This is impossible in the USA even in times of crisis due to the sheer fuckton of paperwork one has to go through to even get halfway to a roadwork permit. Yet here the Japanese are, being efficient workers and saying "Let's get this done."

my roommate and I are pretty friendly with the owners at Q POP, I really hope the effort is a success we're planning to attend the real auction, which I'm sure will have a pretty nice turnout.

Why does the magnitude keep going up 0.1? Were the initial measurements off or something?

I meant in the thread title. It started at 8.8 and went to 8.9 and now it's 9.0.

That's my understanding- the magnitude is measured at the epicenter, but since there wasn't a seismograph directly a the middle they have to calculate it from what data they have- the earlier measurements (8.8, 8.9) were just preliminary. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong)

At one point the night of the quake I heard it was 9.1 then it changed to whatever then it changed again and again.
So I don not know what to believe any more.

It was a 9.0 - before they'd gotten all the data, the estimate changed a few times. 9.0 appears to be the final number.

Just got back, and as I expected the turnout was pretty good. Wasn't able to bid on anything myself, but it was great to see how many people came to offer their support--all of Little Tokyo was absolutely bustling with events. Pretty inspiring.

I wouldn't worry about the West Coast having earthquakes like this. The West Coast is located on a minor fault line so it is no way in danger of such a massive earthquake. Japan however is located on the Ring of Fire fault line which means they are in great danger of massive earthquakes all the time. On the bright side if this happened to any other country the damage would have been much worse. Japan is incredibly prepared for natural disasters like this. Nearly all their skyscrapers are specifically designed to withstand earthquakes and other potential disasters. They have a National Holiday for disaster preparedness. There are too many things to count that they had going for them.

That and the situation with the reactors will most likely be resolved soon due the heroism and sense of duty of those plant workers. If anything we should be keeping them foremost in our thoughts because they are giving their lives for their countrymen. What they are doing is a testament to the endurance of the human spirit in times of hardship because when times get rough all we have is each other.

Japan is possibly the most seismically active place in the world, it is true... but the Pacific Ring of Fire gets its name from being a Ring, and so the other side of that circle is in fact the West Coast of the Americas...
