Yes, the situation is bad, but the country is not about to erupt into a giant mushroom cloud and sink into the ocean, as all the fear-mongers would like you to believe.

Seriously, it's too bad those media rags make so much money off of it. We'd be better off if the sensationalist news ceased to exist.

I found a very important news story which I find very scary and concerning for not just the Japanese but for the whole world.

Analysis: Japan nuclear crisis now seen worse than Three Mile

*reads*

...well of course it could get worse. Just like how slamming your head into a wall repeatedly could kill you.

What matters is if anything is actually being done about it. And something is being done about it.

I heard on ABC world news earlier tonight from an expert they interviewed said at this point to fix it they should as follows.
Because the each individual reactor at this stage are essentially becoming big molten blobs.
They will have to to put sand around each reactor and then pour concrete around it to create around each reactor a nice concrete sarcophagus. Then the reactors will have to probably sit there for thousands of years for it to decay.

Also in other news the Quake has been upgraded to 9.0

I did not know if anyone knew this I was just reading this article on ABC news is that the radiation is so high now they can not even work on the reactors any more.
At this point I am just praying nothing more goes wrong.

Here is the story if you want to read about it.
Japan Earthquake: Radiation Leak Halts Work at Damaged Reactors

The leaks have been halting work off and on. Workers have been brought in to fix things and try to cool the reactor, then evacuated again, in a repeating pattern. Part of all this is actually to keep them from being in the room for dangerous periods of time.

Can this end up like Chernobyl?

No, it cannot. for several reasons.

What, are you deaf, Pyratrooper? The ABC World News people are idiots who don't know what they're talking about. Repeating what they're saying here is doing nothing but fearmongering.

A. They're already in pre-sealed containers which can then be taken to nuclear waste sites and disposed of.
B. They are NOT Chernobyl-like unmovable messes
C. They do NOT need to be put in sarcophagus structures--at least not at the plant itself, since it's in a format they can just pick up and move.

This is not like Chernobyl, for the thousandth time. Stop listening to those idiots.

And in case you think I'm the only one... nope.

I know what you are saying what I and they were saying is a Worst Case Scenario however even so because of the design deference's a Chernobyl like event will not happen.

Diffrences between the designs:

Chernobyl Used Graphite as a moderator (which caught fire and exploded.)
All of japan reactors use a neutron moderator system(which cannot catch fire and explode)
Chernobyl did not have one or more Containment vessels, Japan's does.
There might might be more I just can not remember them at this time

This article is a good read for you if you are interested.

RAPID ROUNDUP: Japanese nuclear reactor and health effects – experts respond

Also did you know the Japanese already think that there is " possibility" one or more of the primary containment vessels are already cracked however they have a backup containment feature to make sure that most if not all the reactor's radiation will not escape.

Well, yes. With all of those fires, the containment vessels may get damaged.

I'd just caution you against taking what ABC News says as true--as you can see, the other sources disagree with the idea this would have to be put in a sarcophagus and left on-site, when there's so many containment things to ensure that they can instead just remove all the junk and build a new reactor in its place.

Just an update, the nuclear plant workers have been fully removed from the plant, this means that they cannot pump seawater into the reactor anymore. This also means that if they are going to fill the reactor with concrete, it will be at the cost of the lives of the concrete workers. The only way that the reactor can be cooled now is by airdroping water from helicopters.

...Airdropping the water would make the situation worse. The water would hit with the force from falling so high, potentially damaging containment.

The situation isn't the best, but it doesn't need people like you running around flailing your hands like the earth is going to end any minute now.

From what I can see in reports, it looks like the workers were only removed for a short period of time, but are now back at the plant.

It looks like the biggest risk now is not from the reactors themselves, but from the spent fuel rods stored in the reactor buildings, which do not have the same level of containment...

The news part of his post: Just an update, the nuclear plant workers have been fully removed from the plant

The wild scaremongering that I will never stop beating to death with a shovel:

This also means that if they are going to fill the reactor with concrete, it will be at the cost of the lives of the concrete workers. The only way that the reactor can be cooled now is by airdroping water from helicopters.

Then as Imajin just said, the workers are back in, and all the rest of that was wild speculation. I'm trying to do people a service here: news is part fact, part wild sensationalism, and there are plenty of resources (ones I've linked multiple times) which make it clear that the "news" by the non-intelligent, non-Japanese, non-scientific media is about as useful as making up stories about how a giant radioactive hand is coming to kill us all.

Now, that is better. Thank you, CB. As the article itself says, they plan on also using a fire hose to cool the containment pond.

So, there are now about 180 nuclear plant workers that have decided to stay behind at the plant in a suicide effort to stabilize the reactor. Let there be a heaven that is greater than heaven for these poor brave people.
