So when the square pack was off a month or so back I decided to pick it up.

One of the games I was looking forward too was FFXI, while I did not have any plans to keep on playing it past the first free month, it was still one of those games I was highly curious about.

However, there was just one small problem too it, the CD key I got did not work.

Now, maybe you could call me old fashion, I don't know, but when a product I pay for don't work I got to where I bought it to either have it replaced or they send it for repair.

So I make an account with steam support and make my ticket, and obviously I know things like this takes some time (and pain) before things are fixed. But I'm just not very fond of the, very so much, bot like responses I have been getting.

PlayOnline won't accept the CD key when I try to register an account with it.

Hello Crys,

Thank you for contacting Steam Support. We apologize for the delay.

In order to play this game, you will need to sign up with PlayOnline's service, activate the game on your account and subscribe to a Content ID.

Start the game in Steam and select 'Launch Final Fantasy XI'

Please make note of the CD Key that appears when you launch the game - you will need to manually input this later.

If you misplace this code, you can find it again by right clicking on the game in your Library list in Steam and selecting "View CD Key".

Be aware that if you are unable to see your entire key at once, the product column, as well as the window itself, can both be resized. The column can be widened by dragging the black bar next to "Product Code", and the window can be resized by dragging on the bottom right corner where the white dots appear.

Choose the option to create a new account.


When prompted, enter your CD Key for FFXI and continue on with your registration.

*You will be required to enter valid payment information in order to complete your registration. You will not be charged until your free game time has expired*

Please make note of your PlayOnline ID supplied by Square Enix and complete your registration.

Once you have completed your registration and logged into your PlayOnline account, you will need to set up a Content ID in order to create a character.

To do this, please do the following:

Select Games -> Final Fantasy XI -> Content ID

Review their information and select "Obtain Content ID"

Once you have subscribed to a content ID, you will be able to create a character and play the game.


Please note that all billing, account, and subscription information pertaining to this game will go through Square-Enix.

The problem is, like I stated before, that PlayOnline won't take the product key when I try to enter it.

No, that's stupid and I won't settle for that. You're the provider that provided my with a CD key for my product that I payed for, it's your responsibility to make sure that I get one that works. The premade bot answers are getting rather ridicules too, not to mention they are not helping. :/

Please send me a copy of your conversation with Square-Enix Support, which outlines what steps you’ve taken to try to get the game working on your computer and I will investigate this matter further.


Obviously I was a bit confused how this both comes as e-mail that you can reply too and the fact that there is a ticket page for it. :p

Anyhow, I don't think they are the only ones who runs this sort of support. But I find it highly annoying when they ask their customers to talk to the maker of the product.

I mean, same apply to brick and mortar business, if I buy a game in the shop and the CD key does not work I go back to get it replaced or refunded, I would not expect them to tell me to talk to the maker of the product and if they did I will tell them that it's not me who is supposed to do that.


You know what the funny part is? After I got a few messages I googled around a bit to see if anyone else had the same problem, turns out many do, in fact, some did not even get CD keys at all. And if this is such a big problem would it not be better to just add another automated bot message saying that they are working on it or something.

I already know steam don't offer refunds for any reasons (if memory serves me right) but I'm just getting sick of this all. V_v;

Lastly, the point with the topic, did anyone else encounter this problem with the square pack/FFXI? :o

Honestly speaking, you might have a hard time getting that problem resolved within the near future anyway.

For a week, at least.
