For the record, when someone I know IRL manages to get ahold of me on the Internet, mainly through IM/some kind of chat client, I DO flip the fuck out about it. Because so far it's only been guys who only seem to be interested in one thing (plus I'm shy talking about myself to people I'm going to be seeing in school at stuff).

Consider this the result of the creeper episode and having to deal with an ex-common friend of ours. I am now the Paranoid Parrot of IRL relationships going digital.

A few bits and pieces around. No one cares, so eh. I'm fairly sure there's jul users somewhat nearby enough they could find me.

I take my personal anonymity pretty seriously, as I've been the target of internet based harassment in the past. While I didn't enjoy it, maybe it's best it happened, as I had to ditch my old life and persona. Now I am who I really am, even if who I am is still kept under wraps to most people. I hope that makes sense...

Kinda.

Funny, that's pretty much my story. I guess learning the hard way makes it easier now.

Yeah, sometimes learning the hard way can do a lot of good, even if the hard way isn't necessarily damaging.

Pretty much how I am.

I don't hide a lot of info, but I don't throw it around really.

A little bit of everything. One or two people know my shipping address (PO Box) and my phone number (But these are close friends and special cases). I don't keep my general location a secret. I skype with friends (voice only) and use xboxlive with the same guys. I show old pics but nothing new but that is due to not having a good camera.

The one thing I don't do is record video or video chat. Just not my cup of tea. I am easily distracted so I would forget someone was watching me and probably start getting changed without warning.

I keep all social networking sites locked up tight and only accessible to people I know well. I don't believe in adding just anyone. I have to have met you personally. If you aren't my friend, you can't see jack shit.

I share my first name with a few select people, but for the most part I try to remain anonymous. I practice safety on the internet because I have had my credit card number stolen before. Just another reason to be careful...

Honestly I just don't see the appeal of video chat... I mean, it's like, all the fun of being on the telephone but also you get to worry about your appearance the whole time too!

It's a step closer to face-to-face interaction.

Same. Call me old-fashioned, but typing is my preference.

I can't read facial expressions, so a face-to-face conversation doesn't have that added dimension for me. I literally learn each emoticon like a word rather than "what kind of face does that look like?".

I don't know... like, a telephone is closer to face-to-face interaction (and I don't mind seeing people in person) than an e-mail. But I hate talking on the telephone and would prefer the e-mail. Maybe I'm just strange.

The only thing I really don't like about video chat is that I feel like if I don't sit at the computer and pay attention to their stream, I'll feel like I'm being rude. There's a little less commitment when it comes to simply talking on the phone. But phones can be annoying because of service stuff and it can be hard to hear what people are saying.

Maybe it's because like phones require you to give responses in real-time with fewer social cues...

I'll give you that one- one of the worst things on the phone to me is when for whatever reason I've been talking for awhile and the other person is silent- are they still interested? Am I boring them? Did I drop the call?

I actually fear making phone calls. Considering that I need to get a job, this has become a pretty crippling issue. And I hate to actually self-diagnose, but yeah this actually makes 100% sense for a change.

Paulguy's Post configuration
That's not really diagnosing a condition. A phobia is more of a symptom.

Also, about chatting preference, I also greatly prefer text, for some of the reasons mentioned by terra, sefi and imajin, and I also just don't talk terribly fast. It takes me some extra time to come up with what I'm going to say before I say it and in a real-time situation, it's a hassle, and rather embarrassing and causes a lot of anxiety, espe@ially when people start rushing me.

True, and I have many things I am afraid to do socially. It seems that even most social things on the Internet is also scary to some extent.

I'm a *hikkikomori, it comes with a given anonymity. Though it is in person instead of the internet.
(* not entirely, as I still take classes and such)

I keep a very strict line between in person and internet, so I have the later as a safe haven where I can be myself.

Then there's also how I can't stand conversations in person...

So you could say I keep anonymity in person instead.

A slight approximation of where I live and my birthday (here). Nothing else unless you have access to my Facebook, which is completely private to non-friends and I only add people I actually know in person.

Well, I've shared a picture or two at some point, I guess.
