I woke up this morning to find that my computer had mysteriously restarted itself in the middle of the night without my consent. When I logged on, I got a message saying that automatic updates have been applied and my computer was restarted.

I was puzzled, since I have my update settings configured to "Notify me but don't automatically download or install them." I went to the automatic update settings this morning, and all the options were disabled and "Automatic (recommended)" appears to be selected.

Does anyone have any clue as to how I could disable automatic updates again? (On XP Professional if that matters)

Edit: Well, I just disabled the Automatic Update service, but the automatic update options window looks the same. I guess I'll have to see what happens...

Machi-Machi v. Kyan!
Actually, I think disabling the service makes it grey out like that.

Have you tried starting the service so you can get a non-greyed version to, ironically, disable it?

Something probably decided to override your automatic update settings using the registry.

1. Open the registry editor. (Start -> Run -> regedit)
2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU
3. There should be an entry "AUOptions" there. Its value is probably 4.
4. Set the value to 2.

I think you can set it to 5 to reenable the options again.

I hate when "security" programs do that "for your safety"... it's so disruptive and unnecessary.

I always fixed it through gpedit.msc
Basically, my school implemented a security system into the network because of the sasser worm, and one of the things is that you have to run a scanner at the beginning of each semester so that the network system knows you're clean. One of the things it does is lock automatic updates to automatic, exactly like that picture. I understand how they want the technologically impaired people to be safe, but thankfully, the people who *know what they're doing* can reset automatic updates back to their preferred settings, and everything will be fine again, until next semester when you need to run the scanner again, in which case you just do it again.

The school district I worked for made good use of Deep Freeze, which restored the hard drive's state every time it was rebooted. A magical technique that basically made the hard disk read-only and Windows only made "changes" to unused portions of the drive. It didn't even have to do anything when it rebooted; it was just the way it was the time before.

Well, I've tried everyone's suggestions and the options window has remained unchanged. At least now the Security Center is nagging me that my computer is unsafe, so that's probably a good sign.

I guess I'll find out at about 3AM sometime if it's really off or not...

Ah yes, that little gem of pure annoyance. I need someone from Microsoft to kill, does anyone know if any Microsoft employees live in California? >:D
