I really needed you to try and leak my real name to the internet. Good thing you pulse thing isn't popular, but I still made sure to destroy all personal information you had on me, since you seem to only want to hand it out to everyone without my permission.

Friggin' social network stuff. Am I the only person left who doesn't want to publicize everything ever about me to everyone?

I don't use Yahoo!, but this is a strong part of the reason I maintain two Google accounts and a strict separation between them... Facebook's success has convinced all the major companies that yes, everyone clearly must want that sort of thing everywhere.

Another thing on this front is that I'm seeing articles claiming that Facebook is rolling out a comment system for sites to use- of course, with your real name visible everywhere.

I keep three google accounts. One for regular everyday sites. One for more questionable motives. And one for ban-evasion on youtube.

I don't have a problem with people here knowing my real name, and it's even in my E-mail address. But yeah, it'd be nice if Web sites wouldn't assume that everything is public.

Shit like this, and yet when I'm cautious about my personal information, I'm being "paranoid".

MSN did this too.

Fortunately, I was worried in 2003 and named myself something else! The name's now "msn sucks" which displays as "msn".

I'm not bothered if people know my name. It's in my e-mail, so hiding it would be quite redundant

Well, some people don't mind, but I come from the internet generation where you hide your name and where you live from everyone.

Of course I'm not as secretive about it as I used to, but I really don't appreciate other companies deciding they know what's best for my info, not me.

I've noticed that- it seems a little weird to talk about internet "generations" (I mean, come on, it hasn't been around that long), but it does seem like people who have been online longer are more likely to use pseudonyms and be more secretive about their identities than "newer" people.

That's really the key thing here, I think... "Hey guys we changed our your privacy settings to make everything public hope you don't mind!"

Well the internet is constantly evolving. Stuff like giving out names has become the norm due to privacy on the web no longer being an issue.

But if people still feel like separating themselves on the internet then I'm not going to complain or anything.

Yeah, kind of. I don't mind my real name so much anymore (though I still like going by Rick Cressen wherever possible), but I only use my real name in my e-mail because of personal contacts.

Social networking, however, can go fuck itself as far as I'm concerned.

At some point, google decided I wanted my real name to be plastered on all their pages, whenever I'm logged in. They must've gotten complaints about that from a bunch of people, because now it just shows my gmail address (which is what it used to do, I think).

I honestly can't tell, is that serious or joking?
