Tokyo (CNN) -- An 8.8-magnitude earthquake hit Japan early Friday, triggering tsunami warnings and sending people fleeing out of buildings in the capital.
The quake rattled buildings and toppled cars off bridges and into waters underneath. In Tokyo, crowds huddled together and tried to reach relatives via cell phone.
Its epicenter was 373 kilometers (231 miles) from Tokyo, the United States Geological Survey said.[...]

I watched it--a burning warehouse rode ashore atop a cresting tsunami wave, hitting and destroying other buildings.

Truly horrifying and nightmarish destruction. I hope for the safety of the poor victims of this madness.

Any word on how Misawa's doing? It's a city located right along the coast in front of where the tidal wave hit. There's an Air Force base situated somewhere near the city that my friend's been stationed at for the past four or so years, anyone know if that general area got flattened?

Edit: looked at some maps, apparently it's not quite where I thought it was, where the tidal wave originated at least. Still hoping to hear from my friend though...

Wow.

Scary as fuck. Especially since I now live in an earthquake-prone area. A reminder that nature is quite powerful.

Hopefully the various tsunami don't cause much damage, at least.

One of the nuclear plants in Japan, Fukushima Daiichi, has reportedly taken major damage and one reactor is in danger of a containment failure. Radiation leaks have already been reported in the turbine building and coolant levels have been reported as dropping in the core. In order to prevent a breach that could destroy all containment, word is that authorities will release a controlled amount of gas from within the reactor core.

As far as the video, I believe that's a design feature of most modern skyscrapers in earthquake-prone areas. They're built to swivel when a huge tremor occurs to dissipate the energy, preventing major structural damage to the foundation of the building.

The gundam photo is actually a photoshop from 2009. I think Gizmodo needs to check their sources more closely.

Anyways, I heard from my friend stationed in Misawa. She's fine, but it's been pretty busy. They've been accepting commercial flights into the air force base to help deal with the traffic that was intended for Sendai's (I think? I can't keep these names straight) airport.

And to think, we here in Missouri just recently celebrated the anniversary of the New Madrid earthquake that reversed the flow of the Mississippi river, temporarily. geez

Who even gives a flying fuck about Missouri right now? And I'm speaking as a Missourian here.

I am still speechless and stunned after watching the tsunami hit--it is harrowing. One of my friends quite literally cried over it. I know a lot of cynical morons will make this into some stupid thing to further whatever agenda--I've already seen some people say some really stupid shit and attack others for even caring about it and attack others for not caring enough, but the important part is this:
People literally died because of this.
People in many different places have literally lost their homes and essentially their lives because of this.
People have lost loved ones because of this.

I don't give a damn about where it happened. It was horrible when Haiti was hit last year, it was horrible when Indonesia and India were hit in 2004, and the disaster that's occurring right now is horrible.
My sympathy to the Japanese and any other areas that happen to be affected.

A few more words:
To all of the people who are saying things like "but what about the anime???":
You're disgusting.
To all of the people who are saying things like "people only care because it's a first-world nation and/or anime, kill these people":
You're disgusting.
To all of the people who are saying things like "well, they asked for this because of Pearl Harbor":
You're really disgusting.
To all of the people who are saying things like "all Americans can think about is Pearl Harbor/anime/whatever, I wish the disaster had happened here instead of there/I'd rather 100,000 Americans die than 1 Japanese person":
You're really, really disgusting.

Still, I don't wish death on any of you. And I certainly hope that nobody else is going to wish death on anyone else because of this. Nobody asked for it, it's nobody's fault, and nobody deserves it.

The ignorance of the American public is really horrible right now. First comparing it to Hurricane Katrina (wtf!?) then now the Pearl Harbor shit?

I donated $10 to The Red Cross to help with this disaster. Very tragic.

Wait...

WHAT?

Anyone who thinks that needs to fucking remember that shit happened almost 70 years ago. 90% of the Japanese who were alive at the time are dead now, and the remainder were the children of that time. If this is some sort of redemption shit, number 1, 'redemption' already happened (though admittedly the bombings were very horrible). Number 2, Pearl Harbor is fucking irrevelant. And number 3, people are DYING over a natural disaster and all those assholes want to think about is 'fuck yeah america pwns japan!'?!

Ugh. I feel sympathy for Japan right now, and hope everything works out in the end. But someone get rid of those morons. Please.

Shit, the nucelar reactor had a slight hiccup that almost threw it into full meltdown, but they managed to stop it. Shit, that reactor could irradiate almost all of Japan.
