Brandon Davies was dismissed from BYU's basketball team after he admitted to having sexual relations with his girlfriend, the Salt Lake Tribune reported Wednesday.

BYU's honor code forbids students from having premarital sex and instructs them to "live a chaste and virtuous life."

The newspaper reported that Davies met with school officials on Monday.

BYU officials would only confirm Wednesday that Davies wasn't involved in anything criminal that resulted in his dismissal from the team.

University spokeswoman Carri Jenkins said an honor code review is under way to determine if the BYU sophomore will be allowed to remain in school, as well as his status with the team next season.

BYU's honor code also requires students to be honest; abstain from alcoholic beverages, tobacco, tea, coffee and substance abuse; and attend church regularly.

The school announced the dismissal on Tuesday night after being made aware of the violation Monday -- the same day that BYU (27-2, 13-1 Mountain West) vaulted to No. 3 in the ESPN/USA Today and AP polls.

In their first game without Davies on Wednesday, the Cougars lost 82-64 to New Mexico. BYU guard Jimmer Fredette said after the game Davies had apologized to his teammates.

"He told us he was sorry and let us down," Fredette said. "We told him it's OK. Sometimes in life we make mistakes. We've got to play through it."

Davies had started 26 of 29 games and averaged 11.1 points and a team-leading 6.2 rebounds.

The sophomore was a key member of BYU's frontcourt and was instrumental in helping contain San Diego State's forwards in the Cougars' 80-67 victory over the Aztecs.

No one discussed details of what occurred with Davies after the game but BYU coach Dave Rose discussed the school's controversial honor code.

"Everybody who comes to BYU, every student if they're an athlete or not an athlete, they make a commitment when they come," Rose said of the school's honor code. "A lot of people try to judge if this is right or wrong, but it's a commitment they make. It's not about right or wrong. It's about commitment."

Davies was one of Fredette's favorite targets in the post, ran the floor well and gave the Cougars length and size inside.

I am just wondering what everyone think of this. I have yet to formulate an opinion on this topic.

First off I don't really give too much of a shit about college sports. But I am kinda glad a school is actually having its own students live up to its own honor code, even if it's Brigham Young University. And we all know Mormons can be a little ridiculous in deciding on what's kosher or not.

Now, let's see what happens if a player comes out as gay. Now that'd be a real scoop!

What a fucking joke. Making someone live up to an honor code is a good thing, yes, but... wow. I understand what he did was different (and I still disagree somewhat with him being let go, although I do think sex isn't something that should just be thrown left and right ... for lack of better wording, shut up I just woke up), but... damn, isn't that a little overboard?

The rest of everything else I definitely agree with.

On a side note... I've got nothing against people who attend church regularly, or want others to. I'm just not a big fan of it being forced on someone. (Hell, I'm not against people who are religious, either - provided they keep it sane!) Some people are just more interested than others in that type of thing.

This is all fairly standard Mormon stuff, and isn't BYU an explicitly Mormon school? I agree that it's rather strict, but on the other hand it's the kind of thing people would know going into it, you know?

I wonder what the university thinks for masturbation.

You are correct. BYU is Bringham Young University, founded by and for Mormons (Bringham Young was one of the founding members of the LDS church). I've had many Mormon friends and even visited the church a few times. Only one of them drank coffee and the rest would always have caffeine-free soda if anything carbonated at all. The caffeine and alcohol restrictions aren't as enforced as the rest of them. Sex and drugs are the main ones, so I can understand them dismissing him for violating one. If it was for drinking a coffee from Starbucks... that would be overboard.

Its considered a sin by the LDS church.

I agree with Imajin and Orlandu, and it honestly upsets me that people are taking the student's side. People that are accepted to religious schools like BYU are made very aware of the rules, and the consequences for violating them. If they don't like them, they can go somewhere else.

He knowingly violated a rule (an extremely important one, at that), and he was punished for it. End of story.

Personally I am taking the side of the school, but pretty begrudgingly on the grounds of yes, it is a religious school and yes, it has students uphold the code of conduct, even if I find it personally crazy as hell, and yes, it actually enforces those rules for everyone instead of letting players slide. I do admit though it is a little lopsided, considering players who are accused of rape can still play, yet someone has premarital sex and gets kicked out of the team/school.

Removed from the sports team? Okay, don't care.

The fact that they can kick out someone out of school because of that? Seriously?

Religions are gonna be religions.

Sometimes you don't have a choice. Especially with schools. I realise this is university, however in cases of religious schools you generally go because of parents (or parent pressure) or because parents are paying for you.

I went to a religious high school, not because I'm even remotely religious, but because of the education.

Ask me if I gave one damn about their rules. I knew very well what they were going in to it, but I personally think that rules regarding anything I do in my own personal time have no business existing in an educational facility. The fact that my high school would go to such lengths as to give students academic punishment for activities they performed outside of school (a teacher once saw a student run a stop sign somewhere over a weekend and gave him a detention the next day at school....what?) is absurd. I know its the rules, but I don't think schools should have the right to govern one's personal lives, period.

I'm going to assume here that he reported this voluntarily after having had sex with his girlfriend; at least then you can't fault the guy for being honest about his transgressions.

Now, if he was tossed from the team for being caught with a cup of Starbucks or for forgetting to shave that day, well... totally different story.
