Hi all,

I've been wondering this for the past few weeks now: TCRF is extremely slow. Either it loads in about five minutes for a single page or times out. Most of the time it's the latter.

However, I heard that some other users can use the wiki just fine. So what's up? Does the server bill not cover long-distance charges or what?! Maybe the packages get sent over-seas by ground mail?

cYa,

Tauwasser

Yeah, I've seen that, though it has seemed a bit better for me in the past 2-3 days. Usually, I'd only be able to get to the main page and check the Recent Changes page, but not much else - if it connected, that is.

Got pretty much exactly the same problem, and I'm kinda glad that I'm not the only one. I tend to be able to check the main page, but if I then try to look at ex. the Recent Changes, the connection either times out or I get a kind of style-less version of the page I'm trying to load, after which I get nothing.

It doesn't appear to be a geographic problem either. I live just 40 km away and have no problems whatsoever with the wiki. That's quite strange.

I've actually had no problems with it, so...yeah.

I've been surfing around it fine with no loading troubles.

I don't seem to be having any problems, but you could try opening up the source and having a look at <!-- Served in 0.301 secs. --> around the end -- that might help to see if it's server-side or if the problem is elsewere.

Chalk another one up for "it works just fine for me," and all the pages I checked were served in about 0.5 seconds.

I can't say I can offer an explanation, though.

For the record, the VPS has a graph on it that shows its connection times to download the main page:

As you can see, it's normal.

Have you tried tracerouting it?

The style-less and "title first, page much later" sounds like your browser is getting hung up on loading Javascript or some other odd issue. The server itself isn't under particularly heavy load, either.

Seconding this. I thought it was either the server or my crappy DSL at first, but after performing a little test, this is clearly not the case.

I picked a random page from the list of long pages--in this case the Notes page for Ocarina of Time--and timed how long it took for two different browsers to display the page: Mozilla Firefox 3.6.15 (my default) and Google Chrome 9.0.597.107. The results:

Firefox: 10 seconds
Chrome: 1 second

It's interesting to note that Firefox tends to mask its loading times with "Connecting to tcrf.net..." in the status bar. This is pretty misleading, and could give one the impression that the server is taking forever to respond. This is generally not the case.

This is not tcrf-specific:

I also get firefox stuck in "connecting to ???...". But not only with tcrf.net, but also with my vps (dirbaio.net), which is hosted by the same company, and also the website of the company itself (tocici.com)

And it does not only happen with HTTP, but also with SSH, SFTP, Minecraft and everything else. It has troubles establishing a TCP connection.

I've already e-mailed them, and they replied blaming my ISP. But seeing that lots of people here with different ISP's have the same issue, it's probably not my ISP..
.
EDIT: Also, Xk, that graph is normal because it probably only takes into account the time of the HTTP request, and not the TCP connection...

No issues here. Tested on Firefox 3.6.14 and Opera 11.01; both on Arch Linux. On both browsers, the index pages for both dirbaio.net and tcrf.net load in about 3 seconds.

Yeah, that's the problem: it is location-specific.
With some ISP's the issues are evident, with others not.

May I suggest that everybody who has issues posts here the output of a traceroute, so Xk (or me, or both) can have more evidence to mail to tocici? This issue has been getting on my nerves for a week or so, so if we can get them to fix it, that'd be nice.

Hi guys,

first off, I get similar load times as xDaniel in the page source code (if, not when the site loads). Interestingly, short server times also load without style with me.
I tried multiple browsers, but since this problem is so sporadic, I could only trigger it sometimes. It definitely times out in all browsers though. Especially since IE (my other test browser) will not show the page until fully loaded, this is pretty misleading.

A traceroute of 07 Mar 2011 19:41 UTC + 01 follows:

Jeez. What does TOCICI have against Germany?

In any case, that does seem to be a problem on their end...
