I don't know about you, but after 5 defective replacements, a ton of hassle and bullshit from outsourced fuckwads, and all that fun jazz... $50mil down the flusher for Dell.

(Then again, what do you expect when you buy from Wal-Mart's favorite brand)

Dell used to mean something and then promptly died five years ago.

It went from 'Dude, you're getting a Dell' to 'DUDE you're going to HELL'.

I think when you go from "normal, competent tech support, cares about customers" to "outsourced, bottom-line-only, screw-the-customers" format, you're basically doomed after a while. See also airlines, Geek Squad/Best Buy, etc.

It's kind of sad.

Always avoided Dell like the plague, so this doesn't surprise me.

Is it really worth saving $23 to not have it custom-built to specifications for you by competent, intelligent human beings?

Outsourcing like that is evil. What happens when the vast majority of the current Third World modernizes and pays its workers a decent wage?

Why do I get the idea these "defective" machines just got a lot of spyware and shit installed on them? She'd send it in, they'd clean it and send it back or send back another clean one, she'd install all her junkware on it again, and hey, now this one doesn't work either!

Total WTF at the emails though, and people calling her for tech support.

I've always preferred custom-built computers myself, but if I had to pick between HP and Dell, I'd go with HP. I hardly ever see people complaining about HPs, really...

My university uses almost exclusively a brand called MPC, which I've never seen anywhere else. The machines are well known for being bad, and are often referred to by students as "Major Piece(s) of Crap". The older computers there are Compaq, which are even worse.

Actually, when Compaq merged with HP they did a rather decent job of doing so.

But yea, the old Compaqs before were shit. This Shitsario had a hard drive out, fan out and motherboard problems in terms of accepting quantities of RAM over 384MB. Good thing I've got half of the kit I bought to fix that in. Just have to wait for my mobo and flyfan now.

On the other hand, I have a pre-merger Compaq Evo here that hasn't given me major problems for the lifetime I've used it... though the Compaq Deskpro EN I used before that was terrible and basically had every single part that could fail fail in the course of a single month... I suppose it evens out

Compaq was pretty meh, mine still works, but I know that they had problems. As to Dell, well, I'm not surprised this bit them in the ass. Eventually someone would go and do this, since I can't believe I'm the only case where Dell screwed the customer over. Although the mess we went through wasn't as bad as being emailed the photos, still, (Warning, rant starts here)getting it delivered while on vacation, despite telling them not to, and then having the incorrect computer arrive(much weaker) for the price of the better one is still bad. Of course, they couldn't just exchange it for the right computer, no, their first offer was $100 off a new Dell computer X_X. 3 months later we get them to let us return the old one and then have to buy an entirely new one, without the discounts we used on the first.

My first 32-bit computer was an HP, and it was utter shit. Overheated nearly to the point of melting the IDE cables before rebooting, all crammed together like hell inside, had a proprietary floppy drive, the recovery CDs were password-protected so you couldn't use all the software that came with it on another computer (even though, so long as you took it off the old one first, it's legal ), 4MB on-board video, etc. The included printer was also utter shit. This was quite a few years ago, though. The HP printer/scanner I bought a few months ago works fine, and recent HP machines I've used don't appear to have many of the problems that mine had. They really seem to have improved.

My old Compaq was impossible to take apart because of its weird case design. I guess they wanted to force people to pay Compaq to upgrade the machines, or just get new ones.

You guys are saying every brand sucks, stop being so fucking stupid. What brand doesn't suck then guys?
I have had several Dells that are amazing.
I have a Compaq here thats really nice and a Gateway from 1998 that is still good for things like ZSNES.
No brand sucks. The internal stuff at the company does, but I can't see a computer failing so horribly at what it does - Be a computer. Sure it happens like with the Presario, but it seems so rare.

Oh yea, forgot since Fails mentioned crap.

Gateway sucks.

Anyways, it just depends on the comp. They're really touch-and-go...that's why so many are better off choosing part brands they like and rely on instead of store-bought brand computers they may like and save themselves cash that way.

Except that'd be like telling me to build up a car from the ground up; I have no clue.

So there-in lies the problem: More people rely on their computers nowadays than they do cars. Heck, one day maybe they'll rely on them more than other people; it frustrates many to no end that their pooter wouldn't load Solitaire right.

I still have an old Compaq Deskpro 66M from circa 1993 or so, which still runs fine today...

I've also had a Gateway before, which I used until around 2006, when my mom got me an HP Pavilion computer, which I still use today. I really want to build my own computer, though...

EDIT: Oh, and I have one built system right now, running Linux (primary) and 98SE (secondary).

Our family had some weird computer brands in the 90s: a "Concept Computers" brand and a "Pack-In-Tell". I'm using an eMachine right now, and I'll definitely build my next computer. My parents have an Insignia.
