Here have some funny information about internet in the US.

No idea how accurate this is, but it would not surprise me one bit.

Wouldn't surprise me much either...

Though I suppose only the cable companies could pull that kind of stunt, since the big telcos own Tier 1-type networks in addition to their ISP businesses...

Jeez, that sucks. Honestly though, if I was an employer I would hire someone even if they were a supporter of wikileaks, and I imagine a lot of people feel similarly.

This stuff is really getting out of hand. I hope Twitter does something good about it, but there's a pretty good chance they actually do keep a lot of that information. A lot of message boards even keep the IP addresses of individual posts, so I imagine Twitter does something similar for tweets.

I really hope wikileaks doesn't get taken down. It's really one of the few things that might prevent people from doing stuff they shouldn't, that's in their interest but hurts everyone else, which seems to be the only thing that passes through nowadays. Anything to control people more and soak more money out of them, and this has always happened but the balance is getting especially bad, and the world has a lot more to lose and repercussions can make a much larger impact on a lot more people and the state of the world itself nowadays than ever. There have been isolated areas of totalitarian control and business practices gone amok in the past, but it's becoming rather global, and the US has a lot of people. I don't know how this stuff is going in other countries but it's heading along a very bad trend here, and I doubt it's just the US but any country where government and business is allowed to get out of control. The rate things are going, I'm honestly pretty scared about what things will be like in 20 or 40 years.

It has been controlled by corporations for the last 50+ years, so nothing really surprises me. The corruption of my great grandfather as state congressman of Washington to a Chinese Electric company was a good example.

The difference is the internet exposes these so people can now realize just how corrupt and broken the system they once just assumed worked fine is. No longer do only relatives of politicians get a glance into how twisted they are.

I mean, shit, it's not like the United States are worse than other countries, it's just that everything they do will most likely have an effect on other countries

It's still not enough, IMO. As long as politicians (and all public servicemen/women) are allowed, and encouraged to get more secrecy and privacy than citizens, they will continue to work only for their own bests interests. Anything they do that doesn't support it is just something they do to keep up the myth of their image. It's all marketing, and they're masters at the craft.
The only solution to this is absolute transparency, and I don't expect that to happen, but it's nice of Wikileaks to try.
(tinfoil hat, gogo!)

The Pentagon Papers was a court case in that the media got their hands on some classified information from the government and the government didn't want the information to be published.

The court ruled that the media was allowed to publish the information, but they reminded them that publishing the classified information could have consequences on the US.

I think the same thing applies to wikileaks. The only reason it's such a huge deal is because the government in such a terrible state, politicians are afraid they won't be able to cover their asses. Though, if our government were still working correctly, this wouldn't even be a problem.

Yeah- I really don't understand why people are arguing Wikileaks isn't a journalistic organization (which is the only argument I can see why those precedents wouldn't apply), I mean, is it just "it's on the internet and therefore ooh scary"? I mean, in the case of the embassy cables they're even working with newspapers on the releases.

I'd say the fact that it's on the internet does change the perception of how it looks. Do remember, perception IS the most important thing, whether you like it or not. If you can sell your point of view to the majority, you've won.

In the case of Wikileaks, Assange wasn't in favor of the media or public. Wikileaks has lost at selling this to the media and public. He couldn't sell it to the media because they didn't profit from publishing details of Wikileaks as they would if they published the details themselves(and yes, I understand that "media" is very, very vague.). Failure to sell to the media means a failure to sell to the public, because they control all that people know of reality.

Deep Throat was a whistle-blower who gave critical details of corruption to a newspaper.
Assange is a reckless terrorist who stole top-secret documents.

It's already been applied to him, maybe permanently (possibly until several years from now, ala the USA founding fathers). The rape charges against him, whether they're false or not, only help to discredit him and the work that Wikileaks has done.

Winner: probably not Wikileaks, despite them doing one of the most important things in modern history. If they lose, so do we.

Wikileaks' Julian Assange to be extradited to Sweden
welp

(Though hey, if he's actually guilty, he deserves his punishment)

Considering the situation, the chances of the claims being false is VERY high. :/
