This is a weird situation. Some users are being forced while others remain with their previous set ups.

	It's just another ploy in their goal towards total web domination. In 5 years, they want everyone to use gmail, watch viral videos on youtube, talk on their Android cellphones, watching TV shows through GoogleTV, and calling their relatives in Vermont with Google voice. ____________________

I notice when I go to YouTube it still tells me to create an account, so the Google account thing can't be automatic at least... (I have a Google account I'm always logged into, but no YouTube account, linked or otherwise)

Yeah I was forced to link my accounts a few weeks or so ago. I tried logging in and it said "You will no longer be able to sign in to YouTube without a Google Account" and only gave me options to sign into Google, make a Google account, or log out of my YouTube account. It wouldn't let me access anything on YouTube unless I did one of those things.

It was pretty annoying because supposedly you can't link two YouTube accounts to one Google account. I'd been meaning to create a new YouTube account since I didn't like the username I had anymore. I did make the new account but I didn't want to completely lose access to my existing one either. Well, unless I make a new Google account to link it to... which would just be a hassle.

Mine must have been already linked when I created it a long time ago. Guessing these are "legacy accounts" which were created early on and can't be merged into a new database without linking them.

Exactly, just like Flickr I think as well. A few years back I think was when Yahoo did the whole linking thing.
To be honest, I would rather not make an account with Google or Yahoo if it was just for one thing, but whatever. At this point I use my Google account probably more than my Live account, and my Yahoo account is solely for Flickr usage.

	I've always had my google and youtube account linked since as far as I can remember. It's not big deal for me. A bit of a pain sometimes when I log out of gmail and then I go to YouTube to find myself logged out. ____________________

I don't have a YouTube account anymore. I had one but lost its pass. I never upload videos, I'd only use it to reach age-restricted videos and rarely leave comments.
