We weren't even testing for that.

Yep, today the first Service Pack for Windows 7 was released.

The biggest thing is that they're supposed to have fixed the bug where Unicode is all broken. Now, I just need to find out how to extract the installation file...

If you use Windows Update, then apparently unneeded parts of SP1 can be skipped, resulting in a smaller download.

I would be downloading it now except my current copy isn't legit. I had a real copy on my laptop but it was pre-loaded and all they give you is the backup CD, not an install CD.

Installed it, took about 25-30 minutes including both download (70 MB here) and installation. No issues aside that Flash player/videos didn't play in any browser first. Cleared the cache of each browser, and Flash works again like a charm. I just hope they really will use HTML5 <video> tag some day finally.

Neither is mine - there is an activator that will allow SP1, however.

Finally updated, I hadn't in quite nearly literally a year (3 days off). Let's hope 7 stops being a dick to me now and actually works like XP.

I'm going to wait a few weeks. I realize this thing went through several release candidates and a lot of testing, and I've not yet heard of anyone's machines being bricked yet, but I'm still a bit wary given Microsoft's track record (remember XP's service packs?)

Your right on the money with that decision man, I understand MS is proud of this service pack but it has done nothing but render half my programs useless that worked without sp1 patch up.
In just a few minutes this windows 7 sp1 is coming right off my computer!
Fuck them for now and just let me have a antivirus, firewall and antimalware and I will be alright for next few months!

I haven't had any issues with SP1 yet, myself.

Then again, I also was having some weird issues with 7 before... so I figure the worst that could happen would be I end up with an excuse to switch to a primarily XP system?

It's not like I'd be able to use DX11, anyway...

Is there anything in this thing that's really critical? For my uses, it looks like all I'll gain from this is more bloat and less performance. What's in it to make it worth the download besides security patches?

Hesitating was a wise choice. Looks like there are installation problems with dual-boot configurations and certain partition programs.

They probably interfered with dual-booting on purpose. Then again, I am awfully paranoid about Big Brother Microsoft so it could be the bias speaking.

I dunno - my dualboot still works perfectly. Haven't installed SP1 on the netboook yet, though.

Has anyone here run into problems?

Paulguy's Post configuration
Dual boot problems are easy to fix.

# boot livecd
mount /dev/sda1 /boot # replace /dev/sda1 with your /boot device and create /boot if it doesn't exist on the live root
grub-setup --no-floppy /dev/sda # If this takes like 5 minutes, don't worry, sometimes it can take forever for seemingly no reason

As said above, in my case Flash plugins (for every browser) refused to work upon the required restart after installing. I tried out a lot, from reinstalling Flash, creating a new profile in Firefox and multiple reboots until I found out, that I just had to clear the browser cache. Since then it works like a charm again.

Again, I never had issues with any Service Pack MS issued so far I installed:
- SP4 for Windows 2000
- SP2 and SP3 for Windows XP
- SP1 for Win 7 now

But in most cases I just ironed the SP over a fresh system anyway, just SP3 was put on top a 4 year old system then, and why the HDD had one permanent defect sector (for years, didn't increase or use up additional reserve sectors), even then nothing broke

No problems here, triple-boot setup across two hard drives with several partitions.

The only hitch I ran into was having to make C: a bit bigger, since I didn't have enough space to complete the installation.
