That's pretty crazy. Considering what its being played on, the frame rates are pretty good. This is not something you would expect from a calculator! Next stop, SNES emulator!

I remember being rather amazed at the first calculators that could play games at all. Then, it became a rather typical way of passing time in high school math classes and such.

Paulguy's Post configuration
TI N-spire is like, 200Mhz ARM. Doom was made to run on considerably weaker hardware, so it's not super impressive. Unfortunately that screen smearing is quite extreme, and would likely make the game unplayable

Yeah, I would guess the screen's limitations are probably the limiting factor here more than the processor...

I've heard that TI is coming out with a color capable screen. It is supposed to be used to create diffferent colored graph lines, but I imagine that it could be used for gaming.

Better emulation will probably fix that weird bug with the screen inverting color and such. But, yes, technology has advanced to the point eventually wristwatches can play DOOM.

Would it not be better (and possibly a lot cheaper) to just have a calculation software for smart phones?

I mean, really, those calculators are rather expensive and I can't imagine that such software can't be made. :/

What is this, 1990? You make it sound like colors on a small screen are something new. Even my ten year old cell phone is capable of this.

Well, on the TI-8x front a lot of the customers are middle and high school children, and a $100 calculator is still cheaper than a smartphone. (and no monthly fee) The N-spire series are more expensive, but still if all you need to do is have a fancy calculator, the data plans and such attached to a smartphone are just overkill.

But what teenager doesn't have a cell phone these days? Instead of getting them a cheapie that doesn't do much, you could get a decent Android phone that can do this, or if anything else an iPhone (the 3GS 8GB is only $49.99). The majority of them are using data as well, so its not like they'd be forking out more.

But still, to see an FPS game played on such a simple machine is pretty cool. Next I want to see it on a Casio watch or something

Calculators are a monopoly. You can find Game Boys for a buck, but the less powerful TI-83 still goes for $100+, because they're required by many school programs. And don't even try getting your teachers to let you use a cell phone in class "because it's a calculator".

They also tend to have very little graphic processing power and extremely slow refresh rates (on the order of 1FPS), because calculators aren't designed for games...

I have to admit. All things considered, I am really impressed by that. Just getting it on there alone is a hell of a feat. Kudos to the person who did that.

Yep, now we have games where we can skin people or boil them in acid. God I love progress.
