So, I don't know how many people here listen to the band Radiohead, but they just released their newest album The King of Limbs a day early! I'm a huge fan of their stuffβ€”I think they write really neat and innovative musicβ€”so I grabbed a copy as soon as I heard and I'm kinda underwhelmed by it. There are of course rumors that it's only the first part of a two-part album thing, which would explain why it feels so incomplete, but I guess we'll just have to see…

What do you guys think?

It doesn't sound incomplete to me. Its different. Like all of their music, its simply different from any other music you find. That is why I love Radiohead. Getting the newspaper version.

Well, why are the tracks officially labeled 1.01, 1.02, 1.03, etc. then?

I'm a massively nerdy Radiohead fan, so as soon as the new album was announced I basically freaked out and keybashed with all the other Radiohead fans I know over IRC/AIM. Even moreso when they released the album a day early and the music video came out.

It's a good album, even a great album, but maybe not on the same level as, say, In Rainbows or Kid A--luckily, I sort of lowered my expectations for the album. It's a more subtle album and definitely more rhythm based--you can definitely hear Colin Greenwood/Phil Selway's presence. I think that's what's thrown a lot of people off is that it's not the sort of album you can just leave on as background music--it's way more suited to late night attentive listening on headphones.

As for my favorite songs off the album, definitely Bloom (which was a pleasant surprise--a lot of people don't like this one, but I definitely dig it--the bassline and off-rhythm percussion are great, and it definitely ranks as one of Radiohead's better openers for me) and Separator (which might be my overall favorite, 'cause it's just so wonderfully dreamy--I loved it back when it was Mouse Dog Bird, so naturally its inclusion on the album was great to hear). I also really like Codex/Give Up The Ghost. Morning Mr Magpie was kind of underwhelming to me--not that it was bad, but I really preferred the acoustic demo from 2003 or so.

With all that said, I am hoping for more material. I figure we'll see more of it in the form of B-Sides. Or they'll release a second full LP sometime soon, which wouldn't surprise me either--it does seem weird that they were in the studio for so long and only have 37 minutes of material, not to mention all the songs they demoed live that are nowhere to be found...

For anyone who hasn't listened to the band yet--I really wouldn't recommend this one for newcomers. It's a great album, but also a fair bit more experimental and weirder than some of their other stuff. In Rainbows or OK Computer would be good starting points. The Bends, too, if you're into alternative rock.

Anyway, here's a very relevant 5 minutes of Thom Yorke dancing, for anyone who hasn't seen it yet:

And I have to disagree with you Rambly. As you know I think that The King Of Limbs is one of the best Radiohead album so far. It is on the same level as Kid A, maybe even a bit above it. Most likely because of how rhythm based it is.

As for my favorite songs, Lotus Flower and Separator. I also really really like Feral, even though most people feel its the weakest song on the album. However the album is fantastic in the sense that all the songs are pretty strong, there isn't any filler on it. Nothing seems out of place, which is another reason I put it at the same level as Kid A

But I do agree, do not start with this album. Start with OK Computer or The Bends. I wouldn't start on In Rainbows until you've listened to at least OK Computer.

Also, I was one of those people Rambly keybashed with, good times.

You're right that it's filler-free, but... most Radiohead albums are, with the possible exceptions of Pablo Honey and maybe Hail to the Thief. They're pretty good about not putting filler on albums. Kid A is equally as consistent and thematic as The King of Limbs, but I think its highs are higher. To me, here's nothing quite as remarkably brilliant as Optimistic, or In Limbo, or Idioteque or How to Disappear Completely or Morning Bell or... ... well, the whole album just has an impact that The King of Limbs doesn't quite have. The King of Limbs is more content with itself, and certainly happier, which is fine and a fantastic quality to have, but it wasn't quite as... exciting, I guess. YMMV, though, and I'm not about to say The King of Limbs isn't a fine album or wasn't worth the 3 year wait.

Also, I only suggested In Rainbows because I think it merges elements of their rock/electronica sides while remaining pretty accessible and poppy. OKC would probably be a better starting point overall, though, but In Rainbows is a pretty good place to go after that. It's not as avant-garde whoa as Kid A or The King of Limbs.

Good to hear some positive feedback on this. I too am a huge Radiohead nerd and felt goosebumps when my download bar read complete after purchasing. I stopped trying to get people "into" Radiohead long ago, so I could care less that a Radiohead virgin can't start off on KoL.

As for the album itself, while initially I was 60% "sweet" and 40% "wtf" because it was indeed very rhythm based, after a solid week exposure, I am confident in saying I am 90 - 10 now. (Always good to still retain some wtf-ness for any album)

I hate to rank album preference, but suffice it to say, KoL is just as good as anything previously released and like the rest, I will never get tired of it.

Rambly pretty much said everything I needed to say. As great as the album is I definitely don't think it's as great nor will it be as influential as Kid A. But that doesn't mean my appreciation for it hasn't grown each time I listen through it. It is some good stuff.

Oh, now that's super-sweet.

I didn't get it before 3:30 PM GMT on Feb 18, but this means we can totally get a copy of it through some other means. I'm so looking forward to hearing it when I get a chance.
