Yeah, the subways (and fancy buses) are more expensive than the buses. Though, on the plus side, if you have a card you can use it to get a free transfer between a bus route and a subway and only pay the subway fare.

Buses will run more frequently, but the fare will be higher, and monthly passes that allow for peak-time travel cost more, too, so don't think you can skirt the system with a monthly pass.

If this happened in Montreal there would be a riot. That just strikes me as greedy and wrong.

Hell, in Montreal there is *one* special bus that goes to the airport from downtown. It costs $7 (more than normal) but if you have a monthly pass then it's just like taking any other bus. No extra fee.

Wait, a bus that costs $7?

Here, the bus fares peak out at $3 and are usually $2.25 or $2.50. You can go back free if it's within 2 hours, too.

How far away is the airport from downtown? Must be awhile to justify that sort of fare...

It's the only bus that costs $7. The airport isn't downtown; it's out of the way and it's probably about a 25-30 minute bus ride from there. However, any travelers who take it from the airport to downtown get free transit service for 24 hours.

$7 bus ticket or $35-40 cab ride? Hmmmm.

Oh yeah, I was trying to tell my mom how to get to downtown Seattle from the airport in case she wanted to visit me. I said the light rail is really nice and costs something like $2.75, but she said she'd rather take a cab even though it would cost way more.

I'm thinking after living out in the country so long, my mom has developed public transportationophobia.

Im afraid to use downtown transit too, almost all the violent crimes in Calgary happen on the LRT platforms. Than again, I have nothing against suburbs transit.

Buses are surprisingly safe here. Subway... it's OK. Sometimes you have dumb kids. But there's rarely any major incidents.

There was some old woman on the bus today who kept yelling at the driver and wouldn't get off when the bus stopped for her, she just stayed on the stairs out yelling and bitching while the bus driver was trying desperately to get rid of her. He said that she'd end up in jail.

Eventually she left and the bus actually moved again. There was much rejoicing

Wow, I've never seen any thing that crazy on my buses. Do you know what she was yelling about?

I didn't catch the beginning of the exchange, but she accused the driver of calling her a liar several times.

I wonder if she didn't want to pay the fare

The fees here can be very pointless.

Pointless to the point that a drive of 7 km in one direction costs €2,40, but a drive 900 meters in the other direction costs €3,70. It's a well-known fact and there are various examples of such ununderstandable prices.

Really? I thought cities all over the world are suspossed to be reducing transit fares to keep people out of cars. One of those save the earth things.

Not here. They went up twice in the past 2 years.

Although I do think that mass transit networks should be expanded to reduce the reliance on cars.

Seriously, I have not heard of any city anywhere on Earth that has been lowering fares... maybe bringing up that argument to try to avoid an increase...

At least to me, it seems they're trying to increase the reliance on cars, by having worse schedules, worse bus drivers, etc. Well, seeing as they have trouble even serving the current traffic (they're only managing it this year by re-enabling old 70's and 80's buses), this doesn't surprise me.

Good ol' Calgary man. Everyone got so tired of the crowded roads that the city decided to reduce the prices on busing and improve schedules and encourage carpooling. The tradeoff for this is higher taxes.

I'm impressed- at least someone has their priorities straight.

I second this. It's nice to hear of something actually lowering prices for a change. Way to go Calgary.
