And yet, just 7 years ago some guy won his presidency on this issue. I don't really have any hope for social progress in this country tbqhbbq.

Wyoming is considering going both ways - bills to legalize - and ban - gay marriage will be considered, I'm placing my bets on gay marriage getting constitutionally banned (Wyoming legislature is controlled by republicans)

Rhode Island hasn't voted on same-sex marriage yet, it's expected to do so soon. The Illinois civil unions bill that passed a while ago has yet to be signed. (I really don't know what's taking so long)

Gay marriage in Maryland and New York has only been proposed, no bills have been introduced so far.

The Prop 8 standing question is still under review by the CA Supreme Court. The US Supreme Court will decide whether to consider a challenge to the D.C. gay marriage law soon. [1]

Illinois is generally fucked up when it comes to politics. Just ask the son of Boss Daley Sr.

Court rejects appeal over DC gay marriage law

The Supreme Court has rejected an appeal from opponents of same-sex marriage who want to overturn the District of Columbia's gay marriage law.

The court did not comment Tuesday in turning away a challenge from a Maryland pastor and others who are trying to get a measure on the ballot to allow Washingtonians to vote on a measure that defines marriage as between a man and a woman.

Bishop Harry Jackson led a lawsuit against the district's Board of Elections and Ethics after it refused to put that initiative on the ballot. The board ruled that the ballot question would in effect authorize discrimination.

Last year, Washington began issuing marriage licenses for same-sex couples and in 2009, it began recognizing gay marriages performed elsewhere.

Maryland Gay Marriage Bill To Be Introduced This Week

A gay marriage bill will be introduced in the Maryland Senate this week, Senator Rich Madaleno told On Top Magazine during a brief telephone interview on Monday.

The 45-year-old openly gay Democrat is the lead sponsor of the legislation in the Senate.

Lawmakers in each chamber will introduce separate bills in order to expedite the process during Maryland's brief 90-day session, which began last Wednesday.

Chances of passage are “the best it's ever been,” Madaleno said.

“We had a very successful election in Maryland on this issue. We brought in a number of new people who are committed to this issue in both chambers. In the state Senate we enlarged the Democratic majority, which is a rarity in 2010.”

Now gay marriage bills will have been introduced in RI and MD, NY is expected to follow soon afterwards. The SCOTUS decision to not even hear the challenge to DC's gay marriage law is rather interesting, although an opinion would've been nice.

Think we'll get SSM in all 3 of those states by next year?

I would bet on MD and RI in the next month or two. New York ... I'm not really that optimistic ... but it could happen. If the Republican senate kills the bill (which is the most likely way it'll die) then there's no way out until the next state elections I think NY has been heavily gerrymandered by republicans to the point where it's almost impossible for democrats to win the senate, despite how blue the state is. Dems hadn't won the senate for 40 years until they won it by two seats in 2008, which then they lost again in 2010. (did they?)

MD and RI probably do have the votes, so it's not that far-fetched.

Apparently, besides Hawaii, Colorado, Wyoming, Delaware also could legalize civil unions this year. [1]

Schwartzkopf said other legislation likely to be introduced this year includes bills allowing the number of gambling casinos in Delaware to increase from three to five, authorizing Delaware's participation in an effort to replace the electoral college with a national popular vote for president, and a bill allowing civil unions for homosexual couples.

Slightly off-topic note: Worldwide, with some luck of course, I think this year could see the number of countries allowing gay marriage double to 20 with the addition of countries considering it (with at least some chance of actually doing it): Slovenia, Australia, Colombia, Finland, Luxembourg, Nepal, Uruguay, France, Chile, and Brazil.

Polls galore

It seems America is not really as backwards as it seems, it's just that the extremists usually scream the loudest. Those polls are very encouraging and positive.

Some are from last year but it's nice to have them all in one page.

This thread is dying, no new posts (by other people than me) in almost 15 days. Anyway, Gabu! Good news for ya! Illinois finally gets civil unions!

Seriously, why in the world did it take him so long to sign a bill.

In other news, Effort to legalize domestic partnerships begins in Florida. For some reason, I don't think it'll pass.

Yay!

Yeah, I'm not too optimistic about Florida at this point. Maybe as more blue-staters move in to dilute the population

Good news, Terra! Gay marriage bill introduced in Washington State

Chances of Maryland getting gay marriage are up with only one vote left for senate passage: http://www.wusa9.com/news/local/story.aspx?storyid=136116&catid=189

And finally, Colorado to get civil unions.

It's pretty likely that all three bills will pass, in my opinion. Happy Valentine's Day, everyone!

This is form the state that just recently unbanned gays from adopting children; there's no chance in hell it'll pass.

Fuck year!

Also Illinois is slow on everything. Hell, we're even late on our own yearly BUDGET PLANS.

Yay! I'm hoping that this one passes. Washington partnerships are already pretty much renamed marriage as it is, so it shouldn't take much more to give us actual marriage rights

Progress is spreading pretty quickly, Hawaii legalizes civil unions and the governor is expected to sign it.

That makes the second state to legalize civil unions this year (Illinois was the other one). Besides Colorado and Delaware which were previously mentioned, Pennsylvania also could get a civil unions bill introduced.

The Washington Post reported that Maryland has the votes to pass the gay marriage bill (however, a filibuster is possible) And this should happen relatively soon.

Sort of expecting it to take longer in Pennsylvania if it does pass because of Pittsburgh and much of the rest of the state outside of the Philly metro...

Any other recent news in New York state?

Firey, what's your stance on civil unions? I've seen hetrosexual leftists and the like claim that civil unions for gays is pretty much the gay version of "separate but equal".

More good news- it seems that Barack Obama and the Department of Justice have decided not to defend the Defense of Marriage Act against claims that it is unconstitutional- hopefully this means it will be struck down...

I'm not FieryIce, but personally I think that civil unions and domestic partnerships are not as good as marriage, but better than nothing. I don't really understand why some people would rather have no recognition at all then civil unions when they support marriage.

I'm also hoping that DOMA will get struck down. Even same-sex married couples in states that allow same-sex marriage lose their federal marriage rights under DOMA.

Sadly, it means that congress has the right to defend the law, and with the swing to the right it did last November, I'm not too optimistic.

In other news, the Maryland Senate is currently debating the gay marriage bill. It is expected to pass by Friday which is when the house will take it up. If all goes well, gay marriage could be legalized in MD by late next week.

Also, Teflon, I completely agree with Terra's opinion on the issue.

It could be a matter of pride or principle. It's not marriage, it's a "fake marriage" set up to appease them. They'd rather boycott.
