I'm using a pixely background right now on Vista, and don't see any JPEG artifacts... might be a 7 thing.

Can the JPEG-compression be disabled on Windows 7, like through the registry? And I'm expecting SP1 to fix the Unicode problems

I can answer this.

Windows uses UTF-16 internally, and that means all characters from U+10000 onwards are internally stored as two characters. Windows XP and Vista always display these pairs as single characters, no matter what. Windows 7 explodes on most characters outside Unicode 5.1.

XP x64 can do that, so it'll rely more on when support for XP is dropped entirely.

Preferring Windows XP here. I have finally had the opprotunity to try out what I think is Windows 7 at school (though it could very well be Windows Vista and I don't know the subtle physical differences between them are). As such, I am still a nooblet at how the UI works. Took me forever to figure out that blank button at the bottom right of the taskbar was the show desktop button. Plus I've been having crash issues with Adobe on that thing since day 1, though considering the fact that it has 64-bit versions of some of the software installed that it could be that.

So yeah, still sticking with old school XP.

I'm kinda stuck between them.

XP is awesome, but I like Win7 better. However, I've noticed that I'm too used to XP and I'll spend ages hunting around for stuff in 7. Plus, there are a few XP things that don't work on 7.

besides the fancyish new theme and
moving/stupefying all the important settings,

7 just kinda seems like a rehash of XP

buuut I use 7 due to its better x64 support

Windows 7 all the way. I've used XP, Vista SP1/2, and 7, and by far 7 has been the best, though it did take some time to get used to the newer taskbar setup.

It supposedly happens on Vista, too - mainly if you right-click on an image and use the context menu option to set it as the background, I believe (which also apparently adds it to Windows' picture gallery). I haven't tried it - I usually view images in IrfanView before I decide to set anything as my wallpaper image (and maybe do the occasional preprocessing, too), so I'll use IV's wallpaper functions.

Bleah. Well, I do have to rely on Unicode, so I guess that's out, for now. Not that I really had any plans to upgrade to Win7 anytime soon...

...though, are there any sort of workarounds? My sister's probably going to get a new desktop system in the near future, and I may end up having to try to deal with it.

I think this is one of the bugs being fixed in SP1, but I wonder if using usp10.dll from Vista would work. (Does anyone have Vista x64 for me to try this with?)

I have Windows XP x64. You can try the DLL from mine if you want. It is 64-bit, and based off of Windows Server 2003.

You use Win XP x64? Is it as unstable as they say it is?

I'm worried that 1.422 is too old. (Also, I would need both 32- and 64-bit versions.)

I tried extracting an update for Vista and Server 2008, but Microsoft went and changed the update format so I can't get the files.

No, it has benefited from proper driver updates. It was unstable in 2007. Now it has proper updates and everything, and is rock solid stable.

I prefer Win7, but it keeps on exploding on my laptop due to not having proper drivers from Toshiba, so I'm tempted to go back to Windows XP. (or Vista, blech)
