My personal choice would be the iPod Touch - it's just so functional, compared to other players... and as far as I'm aware, has the best music battery life on the market at 40 hours. It's certainly not for everybody, though - some people really only want a pure music player. Nothing wrong with that, and I can understand why!

However, I know you're not interested in that one bit, so don't take it as an actual suggestion aimed at you. The Sansa Fuze definitely looks like a winner for simple media players, though - plenty of expandability - and others here already have said they like them, so you've got a good base here. I love the MicroSD support, definitely.

I'd avoid it and try to go for an older iPod Nano, though, if you plan to play video on it frequently... they handle video better than the Fuze. (Higher screen resolution, 30FPS instead of the Fuze's 15FPS.) The current generation of iPod Nano is... quite honestly, bad compared to the previous ones. Lack of video support, and the whole package just seems a lot less usable. Going the iPod Nano route would only have the downside of no MicroSD support. (and don't worry about iTunes - grab Floola or something and be happy!) A 3rd-gen should be good, and shouldn't go for too much. Avoid the earlier generations, though, if you do look into these. Those can't handle video at all, and as far as I am aware are prone to hardware issues.

I have an old iriver (?) player from 2004 laying around somewhere, 1GB. No video support, however - just purely MP3 and OGG... and it can view BMP images on the tiny screen. It held up quite well for me until I started using my PSP for module playback and the fact that I was able to squeeze more music onto it.

Hopefully I helped out a bit - mostly bringing up older iPod Nanos (sorry), but they're still great if you do more than solely music and are picky about framerate, like me. (...says the guy who used his DS for video, right.) There's the Zune series and a bunch of other players, too, but I don't really know much about those.

Seriously, get this, and all of the sudden you have a 12GB MP3 player for $65. Forget all that overpriced Apple shit. This is shiny enough, why pay extra just to look hip?

Edit: Oh yes, it does play .ogg. :)

Thirding a Sansa Fuze. Matches your description, cheap and full‐featured. And it does support .ogg out of the box, even without Rockbox (but irritatingly, not when the file is named .oga, which is somewhat common for audio Ogg files).

FLAC is cool when you have lots of space. I rip all my CDs to FLAC. But for a portable player I would transcode to Ogg Vorbis for space reasons. And that’s easy to do. (Especially on Unix. CD to .wav: “cdio cdrip”, .wav to .flac: “flac *.wav”, .flac to .ogg: “oggenc *.flac”.) Ogg and FLAC also use the same metadata format.

I'm personally quite fond of my Philips GoGear Ariaz 8GB (older, black model, SA1ARA) - very lightweight, good battery running time, RDS-capable FM radio, and sounds very nice as long as you've got good headphones. Yet ex. the Sansa Fuze does look like the better deal in comparison, considering that this Ariaz does not do OGG, does not have an microSDHC or similar card slot, and doesn't have alternative firmware like Rockbox as far as I'm aware.

I've got a Sansa Fuze as well. Much cheaper than any Apple product, and it works just as well, if not better.

A correction/addendum to my earlier post:

Apparently, the Sansa Fuze+ is able to handle 30FPS video as well, from what I've gathered and has the same screen resolution as some of the iPod Nano models.

So, if the iPod Nano isn't for you, a Fuze+ would work. (Hell, I'd give it a shot - MicroSD is too good a thing to not have, if the players are comparable in every other aspect.) The only minus is that some people report the controls being a little weird, and a lot of them have issues.

If you're purely after music, though, you may want to think about bypassing the Fuze in favor of a Clip. I'm not sure about the Clip, but I know the Clip+ also has MicroSD support.

Just throwing another couple options up.

Biggest I've seen is 32 GB for flash-based MP3 players. I think the costs would rise exponentially for 64 GB and up, ending in a bad relation between costs and benefits compard to hard disks.

64GB exists (iPod Touch), but it's really just not worth it. The damn thing costs about $400 if you get that much storage.

Any with no storage at all other than a memory card slot? Most phones are like this. I guess no storage onboard leaves no excuse for some of the prices you see at times.

The closest you'll get to an MP3 player with no onboard storage is a PSP with no memory stick.

Although, those still come with 32MB sticks, as far as I'm aware... so eh. I have about 8-10GB worth of the things.

I didn't mean literally no storage, I just meant one where it has no onboard storage so you can just throw in whatever you want, since generally a separate memory card would probably be cheaper.

I picked up my fuze a few days ago. I'm totally new to this sort of interface though.

And while I have not had the time to experience much use with it yet, what I have heard (and seen) it does seam quite good! :p
