I thought this might be an interesting poll. Which one do you think was better Sonic the Hedgehog or Super Mario World.
I am voting Sonic the Hedgehog considering that was the only one of the two I could beat.

Super mario world still got a whole lot better gameplay then the first sonic game did. I would take sonic 3 & knuckles over SMW though, that/those games are awesome!

 Put it this way: I've never even bothered to get past Labyrinth Zone, but I've beaten SMW 100% at least three times.

So was SMW.
Both of them get about the same reaction from me: "I'm not going to bother beating this."
I did beat Sonic 1, but only out of stubbornness... I've run through SMW but never really played it, as it gave me the same sort of vibe.
So, neither!

Super Mario World all the way. Sonic 1 was far too bland and a lack of spin dash didn't do it any favors.
Now, if this were SMW or Sonic 3 & Knuckles, this would be a more challenging poll.

SMW. The original Sonic is kinda slow compared to the other games, there aren't a lot of alternate paths and no real reason to get the Chaos Emeralds outside of a few seconds being changed in the end animation.
Now, if this were S3&K and SMW, it'd be a different story. |

Sonic 1 was a fine game, but... no contest here. SMW had way more gameplay and replay value.

To be honest, I don't like either.
The first Sonic is... quite bland and simple. While simple is good and makes for a fun game to beat in one go... there's not much to it other than that.
On the other hand, I don't like SMW. I don't like the art style, I don't particularly like most of the music, I find the gameplay somewhat off... It may be the classic Mario game I like the least.
So I'll say Sonic, I enjoy playing through it more.

Even though they are both placed in the "platformers" genre, we all know they have very different styles and represent 2 very different kinds of gameplay. So its hard to really say which is "better" since they cover different ground. Only because we had a NES/SNES and not a Genesis in the house as a kid, I vote SMW because it naturally holds a spot in my fond childhood memories.
I do agree with Imajin though, SMB3 kicks SMW's ass.

Super Mario World by far.
I never really liked the Sonic games. I mean, I do like them, just not much.
Gotta get the new Sonics though.

Although I'm a pretty hard Sonic Fan, Mario takes the lead in this case. Not only was it the very first Video Game I ever played, but can still play it to this day. I've never stopped enjoying it and never will. With Sonic, well.. He's going a tad stale.
