5543 | Can the JPEG-compression be disabled on Windows 7, like through the registry? And I'm expecting SP1 to fix the Unicode problems

XP x64 can do that, so it'll rely more on when support for XP is dropped entirely.

I'm kinda stuck between them.
XP is awesome, but I like Win7 better. However, I've noticed that I'm too used to XP and I'll spend ages hunting around for stuff in 7. Plus, there are a few XP things that don't work on 7.

Windows 7 all the way. I've used XP, Vista SP1/2, and 7, and by far 7 has been the best, though it did take some time to get used to the newer taskbar setup.

It supposedly happens on Vista, too - mainly if you right-click on an image and use the context menu option to set it as the background, I believe (which also apparently adds it to Windows' picture gallery). I haven't tried it - I usually view images in IrfanView before I decide to set anything as my wallpaper image (and maybe do the occasional preprocessing, too), so I'll use IV's wallpaper functions.
Originally posted by Joe I can answer this.
Windows uses UTF-16 internally, and that means all characters from U+10000 onwards are internally stored as two characters. Windows XP and Vista always display these pairs as single characters, no matter what. Windows 7 explodes on most characters outside Unicode 5.1.
Bleah. Well, I do have to rely on Unicode, so I guess that's out, for now. Not that I really had any plans to upgrade to Win7 anytime soon...
...though, are there any sort of workarounds? My sister's probably going to get a new desktop system in the near future, and I may end up having to try to deal with it.

I think this is one of the bugs being fixed in SP1, but I wonder if using usp10.dll from Vista would work. (Does anyone have Vista x64 for me to try this with?)
I have Windows XP x64. You can try the DLL from mine if you want. It is 64-bit, and based off of Windows Server 2003.

You use Win XP x64? Is it as unstable as they say it is? |

No, it has benefited from proper driver updates. It was unstable in 2007. Now it has proper updates and everything, and is rock solid stable.

I prefer Win7, but it keeps on exploding on my laptop due to not having proper drivers from Toshiba, so I'm tempted to go back to Windows XP. (or Vista, blech)
