What would I do for a 3DS?

Probably like ... go to a store and buy one, or order it from Amazon or something.

But since I prefer the original versions of games to Nintendo's recent remakes made easier for a "casual" (read: seven-year-old) audience, I doubt I will be picking one up, even for the actual new titles.

I've had very little interest in Nintendo since about midway through the Gamecube's lifespan, when they began to establish a pattern of mediocrity with Zelda (Wind Waker being horribly bland, and Twilight Princess being unmemorable) and Mario (seriously, FLUDD was a terrible idea, and if I wanted to play a board game I'd bust out Monopoly. Mario Kart: Double Dash was an abomination. Mario Kart Wii is all right, but it's far from being as fun as Mario Kart 64 was).

Metroid Prime, its sequel, and F-Zero GX were great, though, but Prime 3 was barely above-average, and Other M was a disaster, not to mention the Prime Trilogy being watered down and ruined. (This is all an opinion. I am not starting a debate.)

tl;dr: I have heard that the original DS library is pretty good, but not having owned a DS, I wouldn't know, so. Maybe I'll just emulate it sometime in the future. Given Nintendo's track record over the past ten years I wouldn't buy anything they've made.

And yes, this post is intended to get the thread back on track even though I didn't really have anything terribly meaningful to contribute other than a big stupid rambling block of text.

I would probably wait a while till they get cheap on eBay and get then fix up a broken one.

As for getting games...

I heard it is going to have updatable firmware which should be able to lock out those cards and it should have a very sophisticated anti piracy measure for the system.

Yeah, but the thing is, I've had a hacked Wii for ages and that too has updates that block homebrew and such,
But I heard a rumor of it being an auto-updating system, if that is true then it may not be as easy exploit.

But of course, auto updating without giving the end user a choice is legally quite a grey area.

Yeah but it's HTML, though. It's not Jul/acmlmboard specific.

Also, I wouldn't bet on the modern systems being cracked terribly quickly. PS3 took a while, Wii took a year or 2, xbox 360 still isn't really as far as I know. I think they've learned enough from their mistakes to seal up the holes to the extent that cracking it could take a long time. The portables and Wii only had such weak security because software is very bare metal. No virtualization or even an OS to abstract from the hardware, so if there was a bug in the software, injection was possible, and full hardware access was available. I don't think they'll make the same mistake again, so I could honestly see a marked loss of interest in handhelds, since I know plenty of people who got a PSP just for emulators/homebrew. Not sure about 3DS, though, it seems to be going for a different audience who either doesn't know or care about piracy (young children), so it should do OK, and Nintendo's handhelds have never been terribly powerful so I don't imagine emulation and homebrew will be as popular as it will likely be on the NGP, unless the NGP is just unbelievably expensive.

Nintendo should make a dedication to Gunpei Yokoi. They are releasing a system that pretty much is a blend of his creations and what the thing that ruined everything would have been ideally.

So what would I do for a 3DS? Well, I am not eager to get one, I explained already that I still use my DS and plan to maximize its life all what I can-- There are still many games I haven't played and want to, and right now nothing that interests me enough in the 3DS library. But in any case I wanted to get a 3DS, I'd at least do something in memory of him. Even if it's that papercraft of him.
