for $30 bucks at a thrift store. only thing is, I have no games.

this is where you suggest games (other than Sonic 1-3) that are GOOD and worth getting. Zero Wing is already at the top of my list (no really, have you tried it? it's actually FUN)

Streets of Rage 1-3 (although 2's my personal favorite), Columns (but of course), Mega Turrican (you saw this coming, admit it), and Castlevania: Bloodlines. Block Out is fun, but the Genesis version somehow lacks a pause function (to my knowledge - I could be wrong). (Michael Bartlow's music for it though is amazing, even if it's one song)

These are just the absolute favorites that pop into my head offhand. Most of them are really well known, but hey, a couple lesser-ambiguous ones there too.

The Phantasy Star series of RPGs are pretty good, if you like that sort of thing... (2 is my personal favorite, but 4 is probably better to start with as it's easier and has more plot...)

Did you get any of the add-ons, or just the Genesis? (Also, wasn't Zero Wing a Europe-only release?)

Grab Vectorman 1 and 2. They're both fun little platformers with unique character designs and the best trance music the Genesis could muster.

Yes I know they were buggy but they are still fun as heck, even still today.
Also we have to remember that they were ported from arcade systems so they were never going to be perfect.

Gunstar Heroes
Dynamite Headdy
Rocket Knight Adventures
Sparkster
Contra: Hard Corps (I'd recommend the Japanese version, it's actually somewhat fair compared to the US version)
Castlevania: Bloodlines
Vectorman
Beyond Oasis
Landstalker

Ecco: The Tides of Time. You can get the first one, too, but the people who made it had a slight case of being evil, which fortunately mellowed out a bit for the second.
Quackshot is fairly fun (Donald Duck: adventurer archeologist, running around shooting plungers at people).

Seconding the love for Dynamite Headdy.

...In retrospect, I didn't have all that many Genesis games.

Was it really? Damn. Well, is there any region lock-out? I know the SNES only had a physical lockout. Would be nice if there weren't, since I'd love to try games like Pulseman as well (as if I could get my hands on a Pulseman cart )

No add-ons. It was the Genesis, one controller, and what looks like some crazy third party turbo mega...thing. It says ProgramPad2 on it and looks more like an SNES controller to be honest. And it has an X button. I don't know, the whole thing was packaged together for 3 bucks though. Only had an RF adapter though...kind of a pain. I was an SNES kid growing up so outside of playing my neighbors', this is my first experience with a Genesis.

Thanks for all these suggestions so far, I appreciate them! I probably should have mentioned that I'm a big fan of platformers, not a huge RPG fan (I really do like them! but can never seem to find the time to sit down and finish them ><) and not very good at fighting games that aren't Smash Bros. or Rival Schools I'll definitely look in to getting some of these games on eBay though, Vectorman especially sounds pretty promising. The only games I remember playing were Sonic of course, but also Toejam and Earl which I LOVED and Bubsy which was...kind of not very good if I'm remembering correctly. I'm sure I thought differently at the time though

Ristar.

And about the lock-out, as far as I'm aware, many earlier games run just like that on foreign machines, as long as you can plug them in - Japanese carts have a different shape than US and European ones, so just use a Game Genie as an adapter. For many latter games, there are Game Genie codes to disable their region checks, but that doesn't work for all of them; think Konami's games are a bit of a bitch in that regard.

If you want to be on the safe side, you can install frequency (50/60hz) and language (Japanese/English) switches into the machine, which should make most games playable.

Ah, well...all things considered, that doesn't sound like that massive of a mod, so I'd probably be able to pull off putting in those switches if I do decide to play imported games. I'd played Ristar once on an emulator and remember it being rather catchy...though I definitely didn't play through it extensively, so perhaps now would be my chance. I heard they changed quite a bit though from the Japanese version, though if I'm not mistaken it was all aesthetic?

Mainly aesthetic, if I'm not mistaken the opening and/or ending sequences differed between the versions. There was a site that listed the exact differences...

Ah, right: http://ristar-cluster.info/php-pages/index2.html - under "Japan vs. USA". Cheats have also been removed, but beyond that it was mostly changed visuals, it seems.

Alien Soldier is pretty cool. Not sure about rarity or anything like that on it. Really most Treasure games.

Seconding Alien Soldier, but it is pretty rare and expensive and only came out in Japan and Europe (the latter being the more expensive version, I think?). Same for Mega Man: The Wily Wars, btw, great game but equally expensive.

If you want to get Phantasy Star 2, make sure you're ready for a very gridny RPG. You have to grind like three or four levels for each dungeon if you don't want to get slaughtered.
