Paulguy's Post configuration Still there for CDs and DVDs. Probably would be hard to get them to default to removing it on those, since they'll get pressure from some DRM providers who rely on it to sneakily throw their garbage on people's systems.
There is a pretty reasonable threat from those, too. People could easily roll their own autorun-enabled disc and either intentionally have a virus on it, or the auto-ran executable could have a virus attached to it by an existing virus infection on the system. But yknow, corporate interests over the safety of billions of users. ____________________ |

More or less every time I plug a USB stick into my system that isn't mine, the drive's Explorer window opens, AntiVir complains about an infected autorun.inf and I say, or at least think, something like "Man, again the autorun. Don't you have anti-virus software?". The last time was last Saturday evening. | Hrm. They'll (somewhat) admit Autorun has problems, but I'm still waiting for them to... say, turn "Hide extensions for known filetypes" OFF by default...
...among other things. (And why, for example, does it seem so easy for malware to write itself to %appdata% and run, without anything opposing it? Bleah.) |
