I recently manage to get my hands on one of those awesome necklace headphones for my MP3 player, which is something I have been looking into for a long time but no stores have them.

Now, this would all be fine and dandy if the case was not such that my MP3 now broke and can't be hung in the necklace anymore. It works just fine all other ways, but I don't want to carry around my MP3 player and possibly lose it.

So, therefor, I'm looking into getting a new MP3 player. However, I'm not terribly up to speed on how the market looks like, and the worst thing I know is going out there and buying a product you know nothing about only to find out it's terrible.

So... I was hopping I could get some suggestions on what to get. I don't really care about brand, as long as it's not apple I'm all good. Now, I prefer to get one that does not have a touch screen, long battery life, decent sound quality (I'm not picky though,) I prefer support for .ogg if possible, and decently lightweight.

I don't think I missed anything... so, shoot! =)

Ipod via custom firmware would do the trick if your married to your format.

The problem with the iPod, and much like all other apple products, is that it's just too expensive and not really better then other stuff on the market. :/

All mp3 players in general are overpriced, however I am sure you can find nice used one on Ebay, Craigslist or a your local Pawn Shop.
Also I meant if your going to gwt one get the 160GB IPod Classic it is the only one that seems worth the price you pay for it.

And by the way i hate all Apple products.

160GB seems far too overkill for me. I'd most likely never need more than 32GB.

I'm sorry but, you say you hate all apple products, yet that is what you chose to recommend, even though that I quite clearly said in the first post that I'm not interested in them. :/

I also don't want to turn this into an apple debate topic, that's not what I made it for.

Also, why would I need 160GB on a MP3 player? I mean, I never even filled my 512MB one full. :<

I wouldn't exactly go that far -- it's expensive because Apple does like to do that 35% profit margin thing, but an iPod classic or shuffle (bought from someplace other than direct from Apple or Best Buy) is really not that bad if all you want to do is play music; there are alternatives to using iTunes to sync it as well. Plus you can use the classic as a USB hard drive, unlike the (unjailbroken) iPod touch or the iPhone, which are also pocket computers in addition to music players.

Other than that? Um ... I'd be pretty hesitant to recommend a ZuneHD since they have a kind of limited capacity and have a lot of features you might not want. It depends on how much you need to store and your feature needs. There are *tons* of other mp3 players by a lot of brands out there -- this is one situation where making a definite non-Apple recommendation is pretty tough, since Apple is kind of dominating the market.

(I realize that the "everyone hates Apple" thing is going strong here, but honestly they do make some pretty good products, even if they are expensive.)

As quoted by myself on a different thread about the IPhone 4.

You don't expect to use up ~160 GB on MP3s? My music collection has risen and fallen in number the past 5 years and it's currently sitting at 55 GB. I can definitely see people who collect music needing more. I know I do.

I know you said no Apple, but honestly, the iPod Nano is pretty nice. I had one before my iPhone, its not touch screen, very easy to use, and reliable. Decent battery life, considering. I know nothing of the price but I imagine it would be significantly less than the iTouch, though that's not something I can guarantee it also cuts out all that BS with using apps and the internet and is really just an MP3 player.

my sister also used to have a Sony Walkman herself which I believe is also pretty decent, not necessarily pricey, and reliable. She barely used the thing though.

also what is with everyone ever having a boner for FLAC. You are taking up more space for something that you only think is better. Think of it like this. A CD is, by standard, 44.1 khz. You can't GET any better quality than that. By having songs in FLAC format, the size is the only thing that increases. You aren't going to get some magically pure and better sound, because the sound can never BE any better than what's on the CD itself. MP3s do employ a fair bit of compression, but I promise you that its extremely difficult for the human ear to detect the difference between a good quality MP3 and an FLAC. If you're that picky, AAC is better than MP3 and I still guarantee you will not be able to tell the difference. If you think you do, its in your head, because you can't.

That's easy enough to solve. First, get a WAV file from your lossless source (a CD, a legal download, a DVD, a blu-ray, your own creation, etc). Next, compress it to FLAC.

Voilà, you now have exactly the same sound in about half the space.

Yes i do because my whole DVD collection is on it which take up about 70 gigs, around 1GB for pics, around 9GB for Music videos downloaded from youtube and around 60GB for music and that leaves me with around 8.2GB to play with.
So I am hoping for them to release an even bigger one soon.

Shadic: That does seam like something I will look into. But I can't exactly order from amazon, that would be expensive as hell, with the shipping from outside the EU part.

Bagel: It's not that I hate apple, I don't even own a single product from them. But looking at hardware alone compared to pricing it's a quite step raise. Sure, maybe they make top quality stuff, but I do highly doubt that there are not others who do as well. :/

Also, I don't own a single FLAC file. And while I do have a huge collection of music on my PC, I don't think I need to bring it all with me on the same time. I only listen to music when I'm away from home and when I'm in those cases not playing DS or doing stuff where I can't. And that's really not "that" often. So I don't find much point with carrying around a HUGE library of music, I can always switch to what I need when I get home.

Look for a Dane-Elec Meizu. This is what I have, and I LOVE it. Simple, high audio quality, and supports .ogg and .flac files among other things. They are out of date now though so they are harder to find, but you should be able to get a decent one on Ebay. Only downside is it is only 8GB.

The size decreases relative to the original CD, and the original is the only thing worth converting to FLAC. A minute of raw CD audio is a little over 10 MB. A minute of FLAC averages 5 MB (but varies depending on the content).

In order to fit my music on my MP3 player, I have to compress it to the point that I can hear the difference when there's no background noise. (And I listen to my music really quiet, too.) The benefit of FLAC is twofold: I have something to listen to that hasn't been mangled in the high frequencies, and I have all of my CDs ripped and ready for when I get a higher-capacity MP3 player.

Seriously, get this, and all of the sudden you have a 12GB MP3 player for $65. Forget all that overpriced Apple shit. This is shiny enough, why pay extra just to look hip?

Edit: Oh yes, it does play .ogg.

Seconding the Sansa Fuze... I jailbroke mine to put Rockbox on it and so far, no problems here... I have the 8GB model with an 8GB SD card

Yeah, if you don't want to get what I suggested, the Sansa Fuze is awesome. Got one of these for my sister. Only reason why I didn't get one is because I liked the Meizu better, but it's really just personal preference. Both have great quality, phenomenal battery life, ease of use, and support for multiple picture, video, and audio formats. Plus, as others stated, the Sansa is probably cheaper than the Meizu, and has micro sd support. The Meizu is probably simpler though, and may be worth considering if you don't want to fool with custom firmware like Rockbox and don't care about the 8GB capacity. Plus you can get it in 4GB and 2GB versions if you want to save cash and don't need the space.
