Goodbye Autorun, we hated you more than Clippy.

On Tuesday, Microsoft began pushing an update that changes the way Windows Server 2008 and earlier versions of the OS respond when USB thumb drives and other portable media are plugged in. Until now, those versions dutifully executed code embedded in autorun.inf files without first prompting the user. The default behavior provided a convenient way to propagate malware such as Conficker, which hijacked the feature to spread itself each time an infected drive was inserted.

Paulguy's Post configuration
Still there for CDs and DVDs. Probably would be hard to get them to default to removing it on those, since they'll get pressure from some DRM providers who rely on it to sneakily throw their garbage on people's systems.

There is a pretty reasonable threat from those, too. People could easily roll their own autorun-enabled disc and either intentionally have a virus on it, or the auto-ran executable could have a virus attached to it by an existing virus infection on the system.

But yknow, corporate interests over the safety of billions of users.

I killed off Autorun on my system when Conficker was spreading. Nothing autoruns, even though this is an elderly XP x64 system.

I find Autorun rather annoying, really. Even if there was not the threat of viruses, I'd turn it off. Just because I put a CD or USB drive into my computer doesn't necessarily mean I want to do what Windows thinks with it.

My old college got hit with a virus that propagated itself via USB sticks not too long ago, and apparently it took them a looooong time to fix the problem.

This is something that never should have been enabled in the first place (not by default, anyway), and another classic example of Microsoft's security team just not getting it.

>>ESTABLISHING LINK...DONE.    >>FETCHING POST DATA...DONE.    >>EXECUTING POSTDISP.BIN...

More or less every time I plug a USB stick into my system that isn't mine, the drive's Explorer window opens, AntiVir complains about an infected autorun.inf and I say, or at least think, something like "Man, again the autorun. Don't you have anti-virus software?".

The last time was last Saturday evening. So I'm really glad for this update; less for my system here, but for those of my friends.

Blugh. Autorun was so annoying. Ubuntu's always asked me if I want to run the script or just open the device to explore though. I started thinking AutoRun was some terrible bad dream, a nightmare that didn't ever exist.

Hrm. They'll (somewhat) admit Autorun has problems, but I'm still waiting for them to... say, turn "Hide extensions for known filetypes" OFF by default...

...among other things. (And why, for example, does it seem so easy for malware to write itself to %appdata% and run, without anything opposing it? Bleah.)
