Some of you may already know that my mouse has been acting weird. I've been getting dangerous electrical shocks from it and it would sometimes ignore clicks.

Well now there's been a strange occurence. I went to the computer and wanted to move the mouse, and I got another electrical shock and then the mouse moved to the top right corner all by itself. I could still use the mouse buttons but it did not react at all to my movements. I had to unplug and replug it to solve the problem.

The question is, is this a sign that the mouse is broken and needs a replacement?

I think that was your sign that it needs replacement. But yes, if it is moving on its own then that will cause interference with you trying to move it causing a lot of headache. And why would you keep a mouse that is shocking your hand? I would have replaced the 2nd time it did it to me.

Yeah, I'd look into purchasing a new mouse, that doesn't seem safe at all.

By the way, do you game a lot on your PC?

It just seemed rather strange to me that a mouse that is actually rather new would do this, so I just thought it was static electricity or something. But now I am convinced that this is an actual problem that needs to be addressed.

Could be something leaking in to earth ground, and going through the mouse through the USB shield connection, or some kind of coil charging up and releasing on his hand.

Honestly, I'd more expect that he had built up static electricity and fried the mouse. It is that season, you know.

The question is when are you getting the electrical shocks? If it's usually the first time you touch/click it after sitting down, it could be static. But if it's not the first time you click and you've been sitting for a bit, it's not static. It's pretty hard to generate static when you're sitting. You're not shuffling your feet on carpet with socks, are you?

Hmm. My room is carpeted but I usually wear slippers. Could that have possibly caused the issue? I mean, I do get these shocks when I touch the mouse, once I have it in my hands I don't get any shocks.

It wouldn't surprise me- my jacket produces a lot of static electricity, so I always make sure to ground myself before I use the computer... Are your slippers the type with rubber soles? If not, I'd probably mark that up as the culprit...

Incidentally, mine are of the "rubber sole" kind. But I can see how stuff like jackets can cause the issue - usually when I return home the first thing I do is checking out the computer, so it's easy to see how static electricity can be carried over there.
