Actually, whenever I start a new world or join a new server, I get wood, get coal and make some picks. From there on out I hunt three iron blocks to make a iron pick and right away I look for diamonds, granted I don't use buckets, but I usually do all this before the second day starts. :p

My brother's friend managed to fix a similar problem by uninstalling all the different versions of Java he had and reinstalling only the most recent one.

Nope, server problems seem to have affected everyone for a bit, and I'm starting to feel like it's my fault, too.
For the record:
- placed a lot of torches near my home, like usual;
- decided to check the giant cobble platform near spawn on a whim;
- fell down and died...
- ...or at least, I should have, but lag kept me alive for a bit (I could see all my stuff and couldn't take it back);
- chose to disconnect to see if that'd actually kill me;
- couldn't connect again, problems for everyone else seems to have started.
So yeah. Fuck, whoops and sorry.
EDIT- Pffft, that image's amazing! Wish I had it earlier!
But yeah, that thin line is leading to a second house, and the giant blob is for general protection from the land around my home to anything else near spawn... which, in practice, means everywhere.
I haven't really stuck torches around my new area yet, but then again, I don't have a heck of a lot of coal or material for charcoal. So like...yeah. Almost ready!
Since I couldn't get on the server to continue work on my project, I went ahead and started a new world in single player. It's a hilly, sandy beach next to a really steep cliff, with water all around. I already have a cliffside base with a full glass wall.
I also went ahead and finished up my first world, which you can now see for yourself. Things of interest that you might want to take a look at are my main base, my Metroid-inspired Nether base, and the supercave below my base. Careful, as the folder is named World 1.

Yeah, I actually tried starting a couple of games, but then the game freezes on me, and then I end up restarting the game inside of a ton of blocks with no hope of escape and dying a horrific death inside blocks.
Suck-tastic!
I've actually had an idea for building a special arena if PvP gets turned on. I thought of hosting a PvP tournament where the winner gets some kind of kick-ass prize that I don't know what it would be yet. Perhaps a big supply of something? Maybe a complete set of gold armor for flash? I dunno, what do you guys think?
I know I'm not involved in the server or anything, but maybe someone has some idea on how to fix this. I can't seem to run Minecraft. It just fails instantly:
paul@beavis ~/programs/minecraft $ java -jar minecraft.jar
#

Aborted
At that error.
I've also tried the icedtea6 VM and deleting ~/.minecraft/bin, and ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 gives no other programs problems. Unfortunately, I have no other Java programs to test with, or other JNI using Java programs, either, so I'm not sure if this is just my system or what.
Thanks whoever. I'm not feeling good and finally got back some drive to play (wanted to get the town up before mobs) and I see reeds. Fucking. Everywhere.
Needless to say, it's hard to keep that drive now.
