The flat keys are kind of chiclet like, and seem to be related to my laptop's keys. They're kind of unusual for a desktop to have.

I had the opportunity to code Tetris in QBasic (out of boredom) on this super oldschool IBM luggable Portable computer from 1991, and indeed it had clicky keys.

After a while, you get used to the clicky noise, and it stops being so "loud". However, while using it, you have to imagine a whole office full of clicky keyboards with people typing at the same time. It'd be music to some people, annoying noise to others, right?

Yeah, I got used to the noise my clicky keyboard makes by now. Sometimes the pressure needed to depress keys throws me off, but I should get used to that in time as well.

My keyboard looks a lot like the one that luggable uses, as well.

It would be pretty horrible to be in an entire room full of these keyboards being used, though, definitely.

I'm quite fond of my Compaq keyboard. I broke the space bar a little (wiggles, but still works) but otherwise it works great, all the buttons are in sane places, not too loud and the keys feel just right. My only gripe is that most of the multimedia keys need some special driver to function... I could write one I'm sure, but eh, effort.

What I hate are "thin" keyboards (shorter keys), the Microsoft ones that are broken into two halves, and the ones that rearrange the Home/End/Ins/Del/Page keys. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I'm not a fan of the "ergonomic" keyboards either. And they have some really bizarre mutations these days.

The \ positioning tends to suck on any keyboard these days. My favourite places are between AltGr and Ctrl (seen on our old pre-Windows/Menu Packard Bell keyboard) or to the right of the right Shift key, but nowadays they're pretty much always taking up part of Enter, taking up part of Backspace, or on the right side of the left shift key \9the worst of all, as \i keep hitting backslash when \i want to capitalize something\0.

My typing style seems to fit the "flat" keyboards much more. Sadly, I have a normal one with large keys, so misspellings are quite common for me.

I'm pretty much screwed concerning the backslash. AltGr + Eszett is not easy to type in any case.

Has anyone seen any of those "gaming" abominations with horrible keys, completely unfit for general purpose typing? Some "gaming" keyboards aren't too bad when it's just extra general purpose buttons added along the sides and stuff, but still way too costly since the keys themselves are generally nothing special, and still have the keypress limits, which could suck in a gaming context.

I think you have that < and > key in weird places instead. I always found that awkward in Germany, and it seems weird that one is shifted and the other isn't

This keyboard has extra keys at the top. I just ignore them

Both < and > are on the very same key at the bottom left, between the Shift and Windows key. One is shifted and the other isn't. You can also use AltGr to get the bar |.

Even back in ye olde days, they wound up shoving the \ key up by the backspace, so it is a dilemma that has been around for a while.

Took me a while to get used to it not being a part where the enter key is on this board, but, eh, now I'm used to it. I posted 300+ times with this thing already, and it feels natural to type with now. I seem to type a bit faster with it now, too.

I use quite a few different keyboards on a daily basis:

My main one on my home computer is an old Dell Spring-Key from the late 90's. It has the Windows Key and I need that since I use synergy with two other computers, one being a Mac. I've developed this bad dyslexia thing over the years and having the solid feed back not only helps that, it also helps when you are typing fast you know by the sound and the physical feedback that you typed the key without looking at either the screen or the keyboard. The biggest downside is it's a large keyboard and does take up a good portion of the working space on that desk. (This is the keyboard

My main laptop has the Chicklet style keyboards. I find the space makes it easier to type, but for me I tend to typo more with it since I've always had a bit of a heavy handed approach since I type fast. The different spacing tends to slow me down just enough to where I do a better job.

The one I use at work is a standard dell soft-key keyboard. Not my favorite.

It comes down to what you like. If you are a heavy gamer sometimes the PS/2 connector isn't robust enough to register all the keys. However they do make gamer specific spring keyboard:

I'd be interested to see if anyone has actually used one, and if so their opinions.

Well, I picked up a das keyboard model s professional. It's probably one of the best keyboards I've used. I'd honestly say it even beats out any model ms I've used, since it has a similar feel, but not quite as loud. It's also great that the keys have that kind of novelty keyboarding sound to them you hear dubbed over a cartoon when someone is typing.

But yeah, I've never typed this fast or comfortably before, and should be even better once I've adjusted to the new keyboard a bit better. I still make some typos. Unfortunately, it doesn't help my brain lagging behind. Lo

I use this ancient Nan Tan Computer KB-6251EA model (branded for ZEOS). It uses Leaf Spring ALPS switches, so while it isn't quite the original IBM Model M style, it still has pretty much the same result. I like how firm the keys are and how sturdy it is, as much as it took me a while just to type on it properly. It quieted down a bit after I typed on it a while--or perhaps my ears just got used to it, I dunno.

We have something like 20 IBM keyboards lying around our house. Likely all Model M. I need to find which ones work though, since the last one I used finally kicked the bucket.

I always noticed for me it doesn't matter what keyboard I use, in terms of speed. I don't use the homerow typing style anyway. I just like the old models because they are so much tougher than the junk I find now.
