Well, the last IPv4 blocks have been given out to the regional registries, but I suppose it will still take time before the regional registries actually exhaust them.

All this IPv4 exhaustion is making me think that we should have switched over to IPv6 years ago.

At this rate, it seems like we're fucked.

APNIC (Asia-Pacific) is expected to run out within a couple months at most, with ARIN (North America) projected to run out sometime early in 2012.

We weren't even testing for that.

Isn't China already largely IPv6? I heard that due to the huge economic growth in China, they could not give them enough IPv4 addresses in such a short time so the had to resort to IPv6.

It will be fun switching to IPv6 globally, seeing as most of the hardware sold today has no support for IPv6 whatsoever.

I think I heard that there will be dual support for both addressing systems for years to come until everything that connects to a network operates on IPv6. So while there may not be hardware support, systems that still use IPv4 will continue to use IPv4 while their addresses are "translated" into IPv6 in the greater IP system.

Plus the whole 192.168.x.x thing IPv4 has will continue for years to come probably since it's an inner-network special addressing system applied to single (or multiple, if they're small and close enough) offices/businesses. It's just the translation to what the outer network sees as a computer's IP address that has to be done, most likely.

I'm... kinda hoping Windows XP will actually have a patch that addresses that if that's the case and I'm 100% right on what'll happen until the hardware catches up. Which I doubt (in being right).

I heard on G4 about a year ago that the internet needs a overhaul because in a few years or something the internet will crash because will not be able to handle the amount of people using it at one time.

Whoever you heard that from is so completely stupid, I'm surprised they can wipe their own ass.

Paulguy's Post configuration
Yeah, that's dumb and it's dumb to believe it. The internet woon't crash from the number of users, it'll just get slower...

Yeah. In fact if I recall correctly the Internet is already beginning to slow down, though at this point it's pretty unnoticeable.

It's worth noting that the main backbone of the net still has a lot of unused fiber-optic cabling, it's just the last-mile stuff that's getting worse and worse.

The loop segment on Attack of the show is the best i can give you on that. Although I found this article referencing a slow down of the internet which could be what they were talking about.
