I'm not even aware of a cap, if I have one!

I don't think AOL had a cap, either - but at those speeds, you'd never hit it anyway!

AOL just would randomly disconnect you... and move so slowly it wouldn't matter.

That, and the phone company does the moving anyway.

Well, it was thrust upon the ISPs here.

Mobile Phone operators are facing the same issues due to consumer protection laws. Basically the thing is if you provide usage based billing it needs to be accurate and easy to check your usage. Until recently, phone internet wasn't.

Well, duh! If you knew exactly how much you were using, you could stop right before you hit the cap and avoid overage fees, which is no good!

Yeah, they'd rather just charge us tons of money for when we invisibly cross it.

I don't want to even ask how you use 250GB a month.

I don't think there is.

I don't even think we're told how much we use, which is odd, because other people simply get told at the end of the month how much they use.

Stupid Shaw.

Actually, I don't, thankfully.

I'm a bit unusual. My biggest usage is watching LPs. No porn, no stealing of vast amounts of copyrighted material, not even bittorrents. My family watches online television too, but that's it.

I just like to be safe/curious how little I use, anyway.

That's probably more common than you think, actually. The reason Comcast has gotten so little complaint over the 250GB thing is that very few people actually go anywhere near that high.

Well, honestly, streaming video of any kind can use up a ton of bandwidth

People who use Netflix a lot WILL use up 250GB

Fun fact, the subscription movie watching websites of the ISPs? Don't count to that total

Actually, from my experiences... until the end, AOL was rock-solid.

I've had, at most... a hundred disconnections over six years? I can hit that in a bad couple of weeks, nowadays.

Ah. I guess so.

Still, I wish they were more open about it.

Well. apparently the Canadian government is forcing the CRTC to revaluate their decision, so if we're lucky there will be no metered internet.

For the longest time, Shaw didn't even bother to track bandwidth usage except for extreme cases. Now, they're tracking it AND charging you for it, lovely.

Oh, and they increased download speeds a few months back. Soo bad they still have the worst upload in canada!

Hopefully the CRTC will do something, otherwise ISPs in America will be asking for their own Canadian system. X_X

Yep, that's what Stephen Harper said on his Twitter.

Good news, I suppose.

The head of the CRTC is *not* going to come out of this smelling like roses. It isn't good when you make a decision, have tens of thousands of Canadians in an uproar about it, and then be pressured by the ruling party to change course. The hearing today will be very interesting...

Yep

So this was reversed quickly.

Well, when the government tells you "change this or WE'RE going to change it"... :\

I'm sure they'll come up with a compromise, but it has to satisfy all parties involved.

My favourite part of this article was this:

CRTC chair Konrad von Finckenstein

Holy fuck! You may be a fucking corporate sleazebag sellout, but you have one of the best names I've ever seen.
